Top Tips for Easy Prevention of Electrical Fires

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

Regularly inspect electrical cords and electrical plugs:

  • If cords or plugs are worn, frayed or cracked, throw them away
  • If you have a three-prong plug, do not break it to make it fit into a two-pronged outlet
  • Replace your two-pronged outlets with three-pronged outlets
  • Move electrical cords away from sources of heat and water
  • Do not run electrical cords beneath carpeting or rugs or in high traffic areas
  • Do not nail or staple cords to walls, floors, or other objects

Safety Tips Beyond Cords & Plugs:

  • Check the wattage of your light bulbs to ensure they match the fixture requirements, and if they have a higher wattage rating than the fixture recommends, replace them
  • Make sure your light bulbs are screwed in securely to prevent overheating
  • Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in your kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, basement, and garage in addition to outdoor outlets
  • Test your GFCIs on a monthly basis to ensure they’re working properly
