Essential Tips for Preventing Fire Damage in Your Westport Home
4/9/2024 (Permalink)
Fire prevention is key to minimize the likelihood of serious smoke or fire damage in your Westport home.
With your home being your place of sanctuary and comfort, the last thing you want occurring is a fire that disrupts your entire life. A fire in your Westport home can be overwhelming, devastating, and an emotional time - But there are steps that can be taken to help minimize the risk of fire and keep your home, possessions, and family safe.
Here are some essential tips for preventing fires in your home:
Install Smoke Alarms: Smoke alarms are your first line of defense against fires. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside bedrooms and near sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace batteries at least once a year. Additionally, consider installing interconnected smoke alarms, so when one alarm detects smoke, all alarms sound, alerting everyone in the home to the danger.
Create a Fire Escape Plan: In the event of a fire, every second counts. Create a fire escape plan with your family, outlining multiple escape routes from each room in the house. Designate a meeting spot outside the home where everyone can gather after evacuating.
Keep Flammable Items Away from Heat Sources: Flammable items such as curtains, clothing, and paper should be kept away from heat sources like stoves, heaters, and candles. Ensure that these items are at a safe distance from sources of heat to prevent accidental ignition.
Exercise Caution in the Kitchen: The kitchen is a common area where fires start. Never leave cooking food unattended, especially when frying or broiling. Keep flammable items away from the stove, and use a timer to remind you when food is done cooking. Additionally, keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it properly.
Use Electrical Appliances Safely: Faulty wiring and overloaded circuits can spark fires. Inspect electrical cords and appliances regularly for signs of wear and tear, and replace damaged cords immediately. Avoid overloading outlets and use surge protectors to safeguard electronics from power surges.
Practice Candle Safety: Candles can create a cozy ambiance, but they also pose a fire hazard if left unattended. Never leave candles burning in unoccupied rooms or near flammable materials. Consider using flameless LED candles or candle warmers as a safer alternative.
Store Flammable Materials Properly: Store flammable liquids such as gasoline, paint, and cleaning solvents in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources and ignition points. Keep them in tightly sealed containers and follow the manufacturer's instructions for storage.
Maintain Heating Equipment: Heating equipment such as furnaces, fireplaces, and wood stoves should be inspected and maintained regularly by a qualified professional. Clean chimneys and flues annually to prevent the buildup of creosote, a highly flammable substance.
Be Mindful of Smoking Materials: If you smoke, do so outdoors and use deep, sturdy ashtrays. Ensure that cigarette butts are fully extinguished before disposing of them, and never smoke in bed or when drowsy.
Educate Your Family: Finally, educate your family members, especially children, about fire safety. Teach them the importance of never playing with matches or lighters and how to respond calmly and quickly in the event of a fire emergency.
By implementing these fire prevention tips and fostering a culture of safety in your home, you can significantly reduce the risk of fires and protect what matters most: your loved ones and your sanctuary. Stay vigilant, stay prepared, and together, we can keep our homes safe from the threat of fire.

Furnace Fire Damage Restoration in Westport, CT
1/12/2023 (Permalink)
After a furnace fire in Westport, CT, SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield is ready to begin cleanup 24/7 to make the damage "Like it never even happened."
There’s nothing better than the warmth your central heating system provides during the cold, harsh winter, but your furnace requires regular upkeep to stay in safe condition.
When a furnace is poorly maintained, it could catch on fire, causing extensive smoke damage throughout your property that requires specialized equipment and solutions to properly address.
Here, we’ll describe the most common causes of furnace fires in Westport, CT to help you avoid them in your own home or business.
Call Us Today For Furnace Fire Cleanup in Westport, CT - 203-707-1952
What Causes Furnace Fires in Westport, CT?
1. Clogged Air Filter
Inside of your furnace is an air filter that removes unwanted debris, like dust, pollen, and pet dander, from the air entering your home and furnace. When homeowners forget to change their air filter regularly, it can become clogged.
A blocked air filter forces the motor to run for longer periods of time, making it prone to overheating. If a furnace overheats, the blower motor may catch on fire.
2. High Gas Pressure
A furnace requires a precise combination of gas and air to generate the proper combustion for safe and efficient heat.
Low gas pressure could cause condensation inside of the heat exchanger, which could accelerate corrosion. If the gas pressure is too high, however, it can cause excessive heat production inside the furnace and may even lead to flammable soot buildup inside the heat exchanger.
3. Cracked Heat Exchanger
The heat exchanger allows the heat created by your furnace to transfer itself into the air that is forced through your home’s ducts and vents. During this process, the toxic exhaust gases produced by combustion are held safely inside the heat exchanger to be later vented out of the home through the flue pipe.
Over time, heat exchangers can develop cracks that allow toxic gases like carbon monoxide into your home. Since these gases are flammable, even the presence of them in small quantities can substantially increase the chances of a house fire.
4. Flame Rollout
When flammable combustion gases build up inside of the combustion chamber without enough ventilation to provide an adequate amount of oxygen, a flame rollout can occur.
Without proper ventilation, your furnace will produce flames that “roll out” to get to the oxygen outside of the furnace.

Preventing Chimney Fires in Your Weston, CT Home
11/9/2021 (Permalink)
A chimney fire affected two levels of the interior and exterior of this Weston, CT home.
The fall and winter months can’t get much better when you have a fireplace in your Weston, CT home.
However, there is the risk of a chimney fire when you have a working fireplace.
Without proper use or maintenance, a chimney fire in Weston can be more likely than you think. Many chimney fires go undetected and don’t spread into the home, but this doesn’t minimize the serious dangers that they pose.
As your local fire damage restoration specialists in Weston, CT, we’re diving into the ways that you can prevent a chimney fire and keep your family and home safe.
How Do Chimney Fires Start?
Simply put, creosote buildup is what causes chimney fires. Creosote is a byproduct produced from burning wood which builds up along the chimney liner over time.
Once creosote starts to build up in your chimney, it begins to restrict air flow. This decrease in airflow fosters the perfect conditions for more of this material to deposit the next time you light a fire.
As creosote build up becomes worse, the chances become more likely for a chimney fire to start. Creosote is highly flammable when there is a large amount built up. At this stage, even just one spark from your fireplace can set off a chimney fire that can spread into your home.
Signs of creosote buildup:
- Reduced draft in fireplace from poor air flow
- Fire not fully burning - Leaving behind more wood than ash
- Black soot staining around and inside fireplace
- Darker than normal smoke coming out of chimney
- Visible soot buildup inside of chimney
Ways To Help Prevent Chimney Fires
While chimney fires in Weston, CT can easily happen, they can also be easily avoided. Regular fireplace maintenance is perhaps the best way to prevent creosote buildup and chimney fires, as a clean chimney has no fuel (i.e. creosote) to start a fire.
Below are the top steps you can take to make sure a chimney fire doesn’t prompt the need for fire damage cleanup in Weston, CT this winter.
- Don’t burn artificial logs - they don’t burn cleanly and will increase creosote buildup
- Avoid burning magazines, cardboard, or wrapping paper which contains chemicals
- Only burn seasoned firewood that has dried for 6 months to a year
- Try and burn as clean fires as possible (More flame, less smoke)
- Make sure to leave glass doors open a crack to allow enough oxygen to the fire and encourage a steady draft up the chimney, which will decrease buildup
- Keep the damper open to encourage air flow
- Warm up the flue before lighting a fire to reduce buildup. Light a 'torch' of newspaper and don’t light your actual fire until smoke begins to go straight up the chimney
- Be sure to have your chimney annually cleaned and inspected to reduce risk of buildup and a fire
- Install a carbon monoxide detector - Low air flow in the chimney can result in high levels of this dangerous gas inside of your home and tip off that your chimney needs to be cleaned

What Causes Electrical Fires? Signs & Prevention
11/24/2020 (Permalink)
With the long list of items that use electricity in our homes, it can cause us to forget they can pose significant risk for an electrical fire.
Home electrical fires count for roughly 51,000 fires each year, and can pose a significant risk to your home. But how do electrical fires start? Are there any signs in order to help prevent them? Here, we will provide you with everything you need to know about electrical fires to help prevent them in your home.
Top Causes of Electrical Fires
The top causes of these fires are:
- Faulty outlets or switches
- Light fixtures
- Extension cords
- Space heaters
- Older appliances
- Outdated or faulty wiring
- Overloading electric system
1 - Faulty outlets or switches
Over time, the wiring behind electrical outlets or switches begins to wear and loosen. The outlet itself may loosen over time. If wires loosen enough, they could break and cause a fire.
2 - Light fixtures
Many people put the wrong wattage light bulb for their light fixtures, putting it at a risk of an electrical fire. You should check the maximum wattage for all light fixtures before choosing lightbulbs, not passing that amount.
3 - Extension cords
Extension cords are safe to use, but when they're used improperly they can cause issues for your home. Never do the following with extension cords to avoid a fire:
- Run it under a carpet
- Use old or damaged cords
- Use extension cords all the time
- Use extension cords for major appliances
4 - Space heaters
When placed too close to flammable materials, electric space heaters are at a huge risk of starting a fire. Be sure to keep space heaters away from any other items and don't use them while you're not home or asleep.
5 - Older appliances
Also a leading cause of restaurant fires, worn out or older appliances draw a lot of power that the old wiring inside of it may not be able to handle. Many times, these wires may also become old or worn which increases the likelihood of an electrical fire. Its best to replace appliances when electrical wiring cannot be updated.
6 - Outdated or faulty wiring
Older wiring tends to heat up more than newer wiring, which puts it at a higher risk of fire to start. When this is coupled with all the different electrical appliances we now have in our homes such as computers, gaming systems, large TVs or air conditioners, the wiring may not be able to handle it all.
7 - Overloading the electric system
When too many devices are plugged into your electrical system, needing more power than the system can produce, the electrical system can catch on fire. Be sure to not plug too many things into one outlet or power strip at once and unplug appliances you aren't using to lower the stress on your system.
Warning Signs of An Electrical Fire
When you identify any of these signs, you should call an electrician to come and inspect as soon as possible.
- Burning smells. This can be a sign that the electrical wiring is damaged, very hot, or melting.
- Circuit breaker tripping often. The circuit breaker will shut off the power in your home when it is overloaded, and isn't abnormal to happen once in a while. But, if starts happening regularly, there's something wrong that needs attention.
- Sparking. If anytime you plug something in there's sparks - that's a sign of an electrical issue.
- Warm outlets. Outlets are not supposed to be warm.
- Discoloration on outlets. This means that the wiring behind the outlet is producing too much heat and is causing charring while something is plugged in.
- Flickering of the lights. This could be an indication of faulty wiring that can cause major problems down the line.
Preventing Electrical Fires in Your Home
You can prevent these fires by practicing proper electrical safety and fixing any issues as they come up. You should avoid the common causes of electrical fires that we outlined earlier. But, as a reminder, you should do the following:
- Don't overload power strips or outlets
- Don't run extension cords under carpets
- Call an electrician if you notice signs of electrical issues
- Don't use frayed or broken extension cords, power strips, outlets, or appliances
- Only utilize extension cords for temporary use
- Install smoke detectors to catch fires before they spread
- Keep flammable items or materials away from outlets or space heaters
- Pay attention to wattage requirements
Creosote in Chimney: What It Is & Why It's Dangerous
11/12/2020 (Permalink)
Highly flammable, the buildup of creosote in your chimney can put your home at high risk of a chimney fire.
If your home has a fireplace or wood stove, you should be educated on creosote buildup in your chimney, as well as the importance of having your chimney cleaned annually. Here, we will explain exactly what creosote is and why you should take steps to minimize its buildup.
What Is Creosote Buildup?
Creosote is a material produced by the by-products of burning wood. The particles, gases, and other chemical compounds produced by a burning fire travel up your relatively cooler chimney, and cause condensation along the chimney liner. This condensation is what then turns into creosote buildup. Once this material begins to build up, it restricts air flow in the chimney and creates conditions for further deposits, making it become worse over time.
Creosote is dangerous because it is an extremely flammable material. A simple spark from your fireplace can light a chimney fire that can spread into your home. This highly flammable substance has different stages as it builds up, with the later stages becoming extremely challenging to remove and even more flammable.
- Stage 1: This is when creosote first forms, and is soft, flaky, and similar to soot. This type can be cleaned with a chimney brush.
- Stage 2: At this stage, the material begins to thicken and harden, becoming shiny and glass like. This stage requires professional removal by a CSIA-certified chimney sweep. The chimney sweep will have to use a power drill with attached rotary loops to remove it from the chimney liner.
- Stage 3: This stage is when the compound is most flammable, becoming concentrated fire fuel. This type of creosote is thick, sticky, and tar like. To remove it, chemicals are needed. If they don't work, the entire chimney liner needs to be replaced by a CSIA-certified chimney sweep.
Signs of Buildup
It's hard to tell when this hazardous material builds up in your chimney flue. That's because it is out of your sight when you look up the fireplace - You would have to get on the roof to see it fully.
Signs of creosote buildup include:
- Reduced draft in fireplace from poor air flow due to buildup
- Fire not fully burning - Leaving behind more wood than ash
- Black soot staining around and inside fireplace
- Darker than normal smoke coming out of chimney
- Can see visible soot buildup
If you notice any of these signs, you should all a professional for a chimney inspection and a cleaning to remove creosote. Never ignore these signs or think that a chimney fire won't happen to you.
How To Prevent Creosote Buildup
There are easy steps that you can take to help prevent the buildup of this flammable material in your chimney:
- Do not burn artificial logs, as they do not burn cleanly and will increase buildup
- Only burn seasoned firewood that has dried for 6 months to a year
- Try and burn as clean fires as possible
- Make sure to leave glass doors open a crack to allow enough oxygen to the fire and encourage a steady draft up the chimney
- Warm up the flue before lighting a fire to reduce buildup. Light a 'torch' of newspaper, not lighting the actual fire until the smoke goes straight up the chimney
- Be sure to have your chimney annually cleaned and inspected to reduce risk of buildup and a fire
Taking these steps can protect your home from a devastating chimney fire. It's a good rule to not use your fireplace at all for the season until it has been serviced. It doesn't take much for creosote to catch fire in your chimney - So it's always better to be safe than sorry.
How To Prepare Your Fireplace For Winter: 10 Important Tips
10/5/2020 (Permalink)
This house suffered from a chimney fire that did damage to both the interior and exterior of the Fairfield home.
Heading into the cooler weather season, many homeowners with fireplaces are excited to get it fired up and running. But before you jump right in, there are some fireplace maintenance steps to take in order to prepare to use your fireplace during a cold New England weather.
How To Get Your Fireplace Ready For Winter
1 | Be sure your chimney is cleaned before lighting a fire.
Wood burning fireplaces get a buildup of creosote and soot over time. Contacting a certified chimney sweep will ensure that your chimney is clear and clean. Creosote buildup can cause a house fire from embers flying upward into debris and catching.
2 | Check for damages.
Inspect the fireplace inside your home as well as the chimney on the outside. The chimney sweep should be able to check the chimney for any cracks, missing or loose bricks, and ensure the chimney liner is not deteriorated.
3 | Inspect for any debris.
Make sure that there are no birds nests, birds, squirrels, rodents, or other things blocking a clear path out of the chimney.
4 | Make sure to cap your chimney.
Along with checking other aspects of your fireplace system, be sure that you have an undamaged cap with wire mesh sides covering the chimney. Caps ensure that rain, birds, squirrels, and debris do not enter your home through the top of the chimney.
5 | Check that the damper is working properly.
A damper is in the flue of your chimney, which is where the smoke escapes to when you have a fire lit in the firebox. The damper helps to control that ventilation and allows you to open and close the flue, acting as a lid. Check if you are able to open and close it easily.
6 | Test your alarms.
Fireplaces give off carbon monoxide as they burn - which is usually not a problem when the ventilation system of the fireplace is working properly. You should have carbon monoxide detectors in your home to pick up on the odorless and extremely dangerous buildup of this gas.
Fireplace Safety Tips
1 | Use a guard or door when a fire is lit. Spark guards and doors stop embers from shooting out of the fireplace and will help to prevent a house fire.
2 | Make sure that you are burning dry and seasoned wood. Softer woods produce more creosote and will cause it to build up faster in the chimney.
3 | Know how to correctly build a fire. Don't use flammable liquids to start it and set it up in the back of the firebox, not towards the front opening.
4 | Clear the area in front of the fireplace. There are times of year that decorations are fine to have in front of a fireplace, but when you begin to use it be sure to move them away.
Enjoying your fireplace safely all winter long should be no problem when following these safety and maintenance tips.

Candle Soot: Why It Happens & How To Clean It Off Walls
10/1/2020 (Permalink)
A chemical sponge is an effective way to clean candle soot from walls. Just look at the difference!
Everyone loves to burn a candle and get cozy during the colder months of the year, but removing black soot from candles can cause a major headache. Black marks or stains can cover walls and ceilings, upholstery, cabinets, and even your appliances. As soot cleaning specialists, we're here to give some insight on why candles produce soot and how to clean candle soot off walls.
Where Does Candle Soot come From?
When you light a candle, the heat of the flame melts the wax which is then drawn up the wick. As the heat of the candle flame vaporizes the wax, it is broken down into hydrogen and carbon which reacts with the oxygen in the air to create the final product: Heat, light, water vapor and carbon dioxide.
When you look closely at a burning candle, you can see that it has different colors in the flame. At the base there is a blue area, then a dark orange-brown section, and then the large yellow area that we consider the candle flame.
The darker areas of the flame contain more oxygen particles and in turn efficiently combust the carbon, while the yellow areas have much less oxygen and have trouble combusting the carbon particles. Here is where candle soot comes from! When you see candle smoke, you are actually seeing soot particles caused by incomplete combustion of carbon.
In simple terms, candles produce soot when they do not burn cleanly or combust efficiently - and there are many reasons for this.
How To Prevent Candle Soot Production
Once you understand how candles work and why they produce soot, you can takes steps to prevent soot stains from your candles.
1 | Use quality candles.
High quality candles will naturally produce less soot than cheaply made candles. Low-quality candle manufacturers add additional fragrance oils or additives to their products which are not always suited for combustion and in turn do not burn cleanly.
2 | Keep candles away from windows or drafts.
When there is a draft or breeze, the flame of a candle will flicker. When the flame flickers, the combustion process is being interrupted and introduces too much oxygen or fuel to the combustion triangle. Flickering candles give off smoke, which will produce soot and other particulate matter. A consistent flame is important to preventing soot.
3 | Cut the candle wick down before every use.
Over time, the wick of your candle will naturally 'grow' as the wax gets lower and the wick does not burn away at the same rate. When the wick is larger, it will cause the flame to grow larger and reduce the efficiency of combustion and produce more smoke and soot. Cutting the wick down to 1/4 of an inch before every use will help ensure a well-balanced chemical reaction.
But How You Clean Candle Soot?
You have all the knowledge needed to prevent candle soot from covering your home in the future - but what about the soot that is already there? As a smoke and soot damage restoration company, we have only one recommendation for going about removing soot from walls or ceilings:
Use a 'dry cleaning sponge', also called a 'chemical sponge'.
These are available at home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes, and look similar to Magic Erasers for a few dollars. They are commonly used by professional restoration companies to clean soot and are made out of vulcanized latex rubber.
How Remove Soot With Chemical Sponge
- Use the sponge dry. Do not wet the sponge for cleaning.
- Start at the top of the affected area and work your way down in straight parallel firm strokes that overlap. You may need to repeat this process a few times before the wall or ceiling is completely cleaned.
- Do not scrub with a chemical sponge. This will cause streaking and may embed soot into the wall and make the stain worse.
- As you continue cleaning, the sponge may begin to look very dirty but you can continue to use it. You can remove a layer of the sponge to expose a clean surface if you prefer.

What To Do If Your Microwave Catches Fire
9/24/2020 (Permalink)
Don't panic if a fire starts in your microwave - Turn it off, fast!
Microwave ovens are used every day and are generally safe, unless something is put in it that poses a fire hazard. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), microwave fires are only 4% of all home cooking fires every year, making it ones of the safest appliances in your kitchen. Even still, an accidental fire in your microwave is always possible, so it is best to follow proper safety tips and know what to do if it happens to you!
Common Causes of Microwave Fires or Disasters
- Leaving food cooking for too long. Everyone loves microwave popcorn for a snack, but if you accidentally leave it in the microwave for too long and step away, you may come back to a smoky, sooty mess in your microwave. Maybe you popped leftovers in the microwave and entered twenty minutes rather than two minutes by mistake and walked away, not coming back until you smell something burning ten minutes in.
- Is your food sparking? Most of the time this is fine - Sparks aren't a sign of microwave malfunctions and aren't highly likely to start a fire. But if you continue to let it spark, it may end up charring the inside of your microwave.
- Putting non-microwave safe containers in the microwave. Always be sure to double check whether or not a new container is safe before putting it in the microwave. Certain containers may melt or warp and create a mess like styrofoam or cheap takeout containers.
- Putting other materials in the microwave that absolutely cannot go in it. There is a list of items you should never put in your microwave. These items are highly prone to creating a disaster to cleanup in your microwave or could even start a small fire:
- Aluminum foil
- Paper bags
- Plastic bags
- Metal travel mugs
- Metal cutlery
- Certain foods like peppers, hard boiled eggs, or other things that may explode cooking at a high temperature.
What To Do If There's A Fire in The Microwave
- Immediately turn off the microwave and unplug it if possible. This will turn the fan off and stop feeding oxygen to the fire.
- Do NOT open the microwave door. Rather, keep it closed so that the fire suffocates and puts itself out.
- Call the fire department if the fire has a risk of spreading.
- Throw out the microwave.
Common Questions
Can I keep my microwave after it had a fire in it?
This depends on the size of the fire and whether or not any components of the microwave were damaged. If you forgot to put water in an easy-mac cup, but turned the microwave off as it started to smoke - you should be fine to continue using the microwave. If you have any suspicion your microwave was damaged during the fire, throw it out and buy a new one.
How do I get rid of the smell after a microwave fire?
There are a lot of different ways to get rid of the unwanted smell in your microwave. We recommend microwaving a bowl with 1 tablespoon of vinegar and half a cup of water for 5 minutes, and then letting it sit and steam for about 15 to 20 minutes afterwards. Then, use a clean rag to clean out any burnt food or stains from the interior of the microwave and leave the door open to dry. White vinegar help to neutralize smells and remove food stains.
Does insurance cover the damages from a microwave that started a house fire?
Yes, your insurance company should cover any accidental fires in your home so long as you did not start it intentionally.

Chimney Fire Prevention
12/17/2019 (Permalink)
As winter approaches, and temperatures are almost assuredly going to drop, some homeowners will be turning to fireplaces and wood-burning stoves as a source of heat for their homes. This can be a cost-effective and cozy way to provide warmth ib your home, but comes with a couple risks.
One large risk is that of a chimney fire. Caused by creosote buildup and soot present on the chimney lining. If these substances ignite, they can lead to a high-temperature and explosive blaze that can quickly spread throughout your home.
Even though the potential for a bad situation is there, it is easily avoidable. By scheduling an annual cleaning, which can cost between $100 and $350, you can greatly minimize your risk of this happening. The process will clean the interior of the chimney of flammable buildup that can cause a fire to begin.
If you suffer a chimney fire, call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield. We have over 30 years of experience in the disaster remediation and restoration industry.
Top Tips for Easy Prevention of Electrical Fires
8/14/2019 (Permalink)
Regularly inspect electrical cords and electrical plugs:
- If cords or plugs are worn, frayed or cracked, throw them away
- If you have a three-prong plug, do not break it to make it fit into a two-pronged outlet
- Replace your two-pronged outlets with three-pronged outlets
- Move electrical cords away from sources of heat and water
- Do not run electrical cords beneath carpeting or rugs or in high traffic areas
- Do not nail or staple cords to walls, floors, or other objects
Safety Tips Beyond Cords & Plugs:
- Check the wattage of your light bulbs to ensure they match the fixture requirements, and if they have a higher wattage rating than the fixture recommends, replace them
- Make sure your light bulbs are screwed in securely to prevent overheating
- Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in your kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, basement, and garage in addition to outdoor outlets
- Test your GFCIs on a monthly basis to ensure they’re working properly

Hole In The Roof
2/4/2019 (Permalink)
Even a small fire can dramatically affect your home. One thing that people don’t realize is that in order to properly extinguish a fire, the fire department often has to damage the home in the process. Two measures that cause damage to the home are sometimes taken. First, a lot of water is often used to extinguish a fire, which causes water damage to the home. The second measure is cutting a hole in the ceiling and roof so that heat and smoke can escape, They do this so that cool air can flow into the house, allowing for easier and safer entry to put out the flames. This picture shows one such hole. As part of our rebuild process, we will fix this hole that was made by the firefighters.

Flash Fire Damage
2/4/2019 (Permalink)
According to the National Fire Protection Association a “flash fire” is defined as a type of short-duration fire that spreads rapidly through a fuel, such as dust, gas, or the vapors of an ignitible liquid, without the production of damaging pressure. This is what it looks like when a flash fire occurs as a result of improper use of propane tanks. One unit in this multi-family building exploded due to rapid flame movement throughout. Once the fire department had left, our crew got to work restoring the property. Please use extreme caution when using and storing flammable substances. If you suffer a fire or smoke damage at your home or business, please do not hesitate to call us.

Fire In The Garage
1/30/2019 (Permalink)
Recently, a fire broke out in a home and adjoining garage structure. Fortunately, none of the inhabitants, one of which was a small dog, were hurt during the ordeal. The fire consumed most of the interior, and spread rapidly into the garage, pictured here. You can see just how hot the fire was, based on the damage to the car that was parked away from the house. We responded quickly by boarding up the structure, and are now in the process of cleaning and deodorizing the interior. Once that step is done, the rebuild can proceed.

Eliminating Secondary Fire Damage
1/29/2019 (Permalink)
When a fire occurs, it is not only the building that has the fire that is affected. Often, the surrounding structures suffer secondary damage like a layer of soot and smoke odors. If not properly cleaned in a timely fashion, the issue can lead to more permanent damage that unfortunately cannot be reversed. Here we see Odir cleaning the floors of an affected apartment to remove a thin layer of soot that will also remove the resulting odors. Because we responded within hours of the fire being extinguished, this will ensure that no long-term damage will occur.

Attic Fire
8/2/2018 (Permalink)
This is a recent fire that started in a residential attic. The fire started when some flammable material was left in front of a skylight, which ignited under extreme heat. The fire started in the attic, and spread down to one side of the house. SERVPRO of Westport Fairfield was called in to remediate the damage. We will be providing a few different services in this case. First, we will be packing up contents and belongings to store while other work is being done. We will also be cleaning the soot off the walls, as well as deodorizing the area from the smoke smell. Then, reconstruction can begin on the actual frame of the house.
To avoid a similar disaster, remember to keep all flammable objects out of direct sunlight where they may get too hot.
Fire Education Class
8/2/2018 (Permalink)
One of the best ways to learn how to avoid a disaster occurring in your home is to be educated about the issues that can be prevented. Getting that knowledge at an early age is even more valuable, so it becomes normal at a young age.
That is why SERVPRO of Westport Fairfield sponsored a local class for young kids to learn about disaster prevention and management. The children learned about fire safety in the summer class. They learned how to make an evacuation plan for the family in the event of a fire, or any other situation where they would need to leave the house. In the photo, the class is learning about the fire trucks and how they work to put out fires. Each child even got to spray the hose!
Fire Extinguisher Importance For Your Home or Business
2/5/2018 (Permalink)
Office buildings need specific fire safety equipment to keep both employees and clients safe. This includes smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire alarms, and extinguishers.
The first step in fire damage restoration is to put out the fire using the proper tools. A first responder may use an approved portable fire extinguisher to prevent a small fire from growing and causing further damage.
The National Fire Protection Agency publishes a series of standards and requirements for portable fire extinguishers called NFPA 10, available here.
No matter what the size of the fire, your first priority should be to get everyone out safely and call 911. Once the fire has been put out, you can call SERVPRO of Westport Fairfield at (203) 324-1642 to assist.

Fire Investigation Assistance
2/5/2018 (Permalink)
After a large fire loss many questions need to be answered such as:
• What was the source of the fire?
• Were there any fire accelerants present?
• Was there negligence or arson activity?
• Was it a mechanical/structural issue or human error?
Local fire departments, private insurance companies, gas and power company representatives and many others are called upon to investigate the scene of the fire and do their best to answer these and many other questions. This process can take from a few days to several weeks.
SERVPRO will set up a containment fence around the perimeter of the property and install any needed wind and/or erosion control barriers. We will bring on site portable restrooms and any heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes and skid steers that are requested by the investigation team. We provide the investigators with a mobile office, generators for power, lights and computers, hard hats, gloves, respirators, eye protection, water, coffee and miscellaneous office supplies.
Providing the fire investigation team with all the resources necessary to accurately and quickly determine the cause of the fire, helps streamline the entire insurance claims process, ensuring the reconstruction is started sooner for the property owners, so they can get back to living “Like it never even happened.”
SERVPRO of Westport Fairfield is here to help with all fire damage and remediation issues.
Avoiding a Dryer Fire
2/5/2018 (Permalink)
The fear of a dryer fire is one that is not commonly heard of, however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries due to clothes dryer fires. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.
Here are some small steps to take to Avoid a Dryer Fire:
1. Dryer's produce large amounts of lint. Be sure to clean the lint trap after EVERY use of the dryer.
2. Dryer Vents should ONLY be made of metal and be short and straight. Bends and curves result in lint buildup increasing the risk of a fire.
3. Do not run the dryer when you are away from home or sleeping.
Aftermath of a Home Fire
4/7/2017 (Permalink)
Recovering from a fire is not easy by any means. It is an emotionally draining process that turns your life upset down. The hardest part comes at the beginning, when you feel helpless and are completely unsure as to how to proceed. With that in mind, our goal is to present to you the fundamental steps you need to take immediately after the fire is extinguished.
Deal With Insurance
You should already be on the phone with your insurance agent before the firefighters even get done putting out the fire. Mind you, this is just the beginning. After a few days, you’ll need to get a copy of the official “fire report” from your local fire department. The insurance agency will likely send an adjustor out to survey the damage and help you get in touch with a restoration agency, such as the professionals at SERVPRO of Westport Fairfield.
If you are renting, then you’ll obviously need to contact the owner of the home. If you own home but don’t have insurance, on the other hand, then you’ll want to speak with the Internal Revenue Service. You might be eligible for something known as casualty loss.
Settle in Somewhere
Most likely, your home is currently in an unlivable state, meaning you’re going to have to find somewhere else to stay. Your best bet is to stay with friends or family. However, if that’s not an option, check with your insurance company to see if your policy covers temporary living expenses. Otherwise, contact the American Red Cross.
Before you leave, try to rummage through your home for some essential items like the following: Identification Cards, Medications, Eye Glasses / Hearing Aids, Wallets, Credit Cards / Checkbooks, Money. **Only do this AFTER you get permission from the firefighters to reenter your home.**
Turn Off Utilities
Make certain you get all of your primary utilities turned off. Why waste money for services when you are not even living in your home? Plus, restoration cannot be performed on your home if there’s still electricity and such running through it. The risks of electrocution would be far too high.
Contact a Restoration Company
This is perhaps the most important step. You’ll need to contact a professional, full-service restoration company, such as SERVPRO. Our company is trained specifically to deal with post-tragedy damage. Below is a list of some of the things you can expect us to do:
The company will start by removing all the water from your home. During a fire, a lot of water from the firefighters hoses usually collects all over the place. Plus, fires sometimes cause pipes to burst, thus leading to even more severe flooding. The point is that restoration cannot begin until the water is first removed.
The company will then start with water restoration. Carpets, walls, ducts must be dried. Mold must be removed. Just this step itself can take a few days.
Next is the actual fire restoration. First and foremost, the company will inspect the structural foundation of your home and fix any major problems. Obviously, if a ceiling is about to crash, then it must be attended to before any other restoration efforts can be completed.
Once the structural foundation is secure, the specialists will start cleaning up soot/smoke damage, deodorizing everything (carpets, walls, furniture, etc.) and basically returning the home back to normal. If anything is so damaged that it cannot be repaired, it’ll be removed and thrown away. It’s your responsibility to let your insurance company know what items you lost.
Last, but not least, the company will clean up the remaining mess (dust, debris, etc.) and rearrange everything back into place.
Move Back In
Finally, you get to move back into your home and resume life. Unfortunately, it can take quite a bit of time before you even get to this final step. We’re talking about several weeks. The truth is that restoring a home from a fire takes a lot of time, a lot of resources and a lot of money.
Just remember to keep in close contact with your insurance company through the whole process. If all goes well, you’ll get your home back in one piece, and you’ll get your lost possessions replaced.
When you have fire, water and mold restoration service needs, give the experienced professionals at SERVPRO a call.
