The only way to completely remove the smell is by repairing the damages and any secondary damages it caused.

  • Damaged or broken sewer lines can block the flow of sewage from your home.
  • Tree roots can grow into sewer lines and block the pipe.

What To Do After A Sewage Backup in Fairfield, CT

1/5/2023 (Permalink)

What To Do After A Sewage Backup Near Me in Fairfield, CT SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield uses the most advanced techniques and solutions to provide expert sewage cleanup in Fairfield, CT.

Sewage backups are a homeowner’s worst nightmare, and they often come when you least expect it.

When a sewer backs up, it can cause widespread contamination throughout your property. In fact, sewage water is considered Category 3: Black Water, which is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested.

Sewage backups in Fairfield, CT are a problem you never want to deal with. Below, we’ve outlined what to do when you discover a sewage backup, as well as the most common causes to help avoid them.

Need Sewage Cleanup in Fairfield, CT? Call Us Today - 203-707-1952

How to Handle A Sewage Backup

  • Don’t enter the affected area! Sewage water is dangerous and any contact should be avoided.
  • Call a plumber or septic company to repair the issue. Depending on the cause, your septic system or drain lines may need to be repaired or replaced. If the sewage backup was caused by a clogged drain, you will need someone to clear the clog so it doesn’t occur again.
  • Call a sewage cleanup service in Fairfield, CT. You want to seek immediate assistance from a professional sewage cleanup company to prevent the spread of contamination and damages. SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield provides a 24/7 emergency response to begin the cleanup process right away to help minimize losses.
  • Call your insurance company. Most sewage backups are covered by homeowners insurance, so you want to call your insurance company to find out more information and open a claim.
  • Avoid using your toilets and sinks until the sewage backup is properly handled. Don’t use the water supply system in your home until the problem has been completely addressed.

What Causes Sewage Backups?

1. Clogs in Drain Pipes or Main Sewer Line

Blockages in your property’s drain pipes or the city’s main line can prevent waste from flowing freely away from your home, pushing waste that should flow into the public sewer system backwards.

Clogs are often caused by flushing items like feminine hygiene products or diapers down the toilet. Rinsing cooking grease, hair, or other solid materials down your drain can also create a blockage.

2. Physical Damage to Sewer Lines

Normal wear-and-tear can cause corrosion or sediment buildup in your pipes, which can then create leaks and blockages. Natural soil movement can also lead to damage.

When sewer lines are damaged, wastewater is unable to flow through them, so most of it will build up in the line and eventually cause a backup.

3. Tree Roots Growing into Pipes or Septic System

Did you know that tree roots are naturally drawn to the water in your pipes?

Tree roots will actually grow towards any small leaks that are present in your sewer line, and can eventually grow through the pipes and create a blockage that causes a backup.

4. Overflowing Septic Tank

When septic tanks reach their maximum capacity, the rest of the water will have nowhere to go, causing it to backflow into your home.

5. Heavy Rains or Flooding

Since your municipal sewer system collects all of the runoff in your neighborhood, periods of heavy rain or flooding can cause the system to reach its maximum capacity.

When the municipal sewer system becomes overfilled, excess water can flow backward into your home’s sewer line.

Can Snow Cause Water Damage in Westport, CT?

1/5/2023 (Permalink)

Can Snow Cause Water Damage Near Me in Westport, CT? When melting snow causes leaks or flooding in your home, our team is Here to Help with snow water damage restoration in Westport, CT.

Connecticut homeowners are familiar with snowstorms, but they may not realize how common water damage may become during the winter season.

Did you know that snow and water damage can often go hand in hand? Not only can your roof collapse due to the heavy weight of snow, but melting snow and ice can also cause significant damage throughout your property.

Need Snow Water Damage Restoration in Westport, CT? Call Us Today - 203-707-1952

What Causes Snow Water Damage in Westport, CT?

There are several ways snow and ice can cause water damage, such as:

  • Excessive snow melt
  • Ice dams
  • Leaks from melting snow
  • Roof leak after heavy snowfall
  • Leaks from clogged gutters

1. Excessive Snow Melt

If warmer temperatures follow a snowstorm, any snow that’s piled up around your property can melt and oversaturate the ground.

Once the ground around your foundation becomes oversaturated, the water can seep through the concrete and into your basement, similarly to how basements flood after heavy rains.

2. Ice Dams

When rising temperatures cause the snow on your roof to melt, the water flows to the edge and refreezes. Over time, this process creates a large ridge of ice buildup, known as an ice dam.

Ice dams can cause water to back up under shingles and into your attic, resulting in roof and ceiling leaks inside your home.

3. Leaks From Melting Snow

Melting snow can easily slip through any cracks or crevices that may be present in your property.

This means that any gaps in windows, doors, or other areas can allow water to make its way into your home.

4. Roof Leak After Heavy Snowfall

Did you know that one cubic foot of snow can weigh anywhere from 7 to 20 pounds?

When heavy snow accumulates on your roof, it can weaken the structural framing, leaving your roof susceptible to leaks or collapse.

5. Leaks From Clogged Gutters

Gutters help move water away from your roof and foundation to prevent water damage.

When gutters become filled with snow and ice, they may overflow, directing water down the side of your house and into the ground at your foundation.

How To Prevent Water Damage From Melting Snow in Westport, CT

There are several things homeowners can do to help avoid snow water damage in Westport, CT.

  1. Use a roof rake - A roof rake can help prevent excess buildup of snow and ice on your roof and in gutters.
  2. Remove snow from the perimeter of your home - By shoveling snow away from your home, you can help prevent melting snow from oversaturating the ground around your foundation.
  3. Make sure your attic is properly insulated - Ensuring your attic stays cold prevents the snow on your roof from melting and creating an ice dam. You can also install heat cables to melt away snow and ice that may build up on the edges of your roof.
  4. Clear your gutters of any debris before and after snowstorms - Keeping your gutters clear allows melting snow to flow freely away from your home.
  5. Get Your Roof Inspected - Call a professional to inspect your roof and perform any needed repairs before snow and ice have the opportunity to cause more damage.
  6. Fill any cracks before winter arrives - Make sure any cracks or gaps in the structure of your home are filled to prevent melting snow from slipping through.

Preventing Sewage Backups in Westport, CT

11/8/2022 (Permalink)

Preventing Sewage Backups Near Me in Westport, CT SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield uses specialized equipment and techniques to properly clean your home or business after a sewage backup in Westport, CT.

Unfortunately, sewage backups are becoming increasingly common in Connecticut households.

When a sewage backup occurs, it can cause serious water damage and contamination that may spread to various areas throughout your property. These problems are not only dangerous but can also become very expensive.

Here, we will review why you may be dealing with a sewage backup in Westport, CT, as well as how homeowners can help prevent sewage backups in the first place.

Need Sewage Backup Cleaning in Westport, CT? Call Us 24/7 - 203-707-1952

Why Is Your Sewer Backed Up?

There are various reasons why your sewer may be backing up. The most common causes include:

  1. Clogs in drain pipes or main sewer line
  2. Physical damage to sewer lines
  3. Tree roots growing into pipes or septic system
  4. Overflowing septic tank
  5. Heavy rains or flooding

1. Clogs in Drain Pipes or Main Sewer Line

Blockages in your home’s drain pipes or in the city’s main sewer line can push waste that should flow into the public sewer system back into your home.

Clogs can be caused by flushing items like diapers or sanitary napkins down the toilet. Putting grease, coffee grounds, or other solid materials down your drain can also clog your sewer line and cause a backup.

2. Physical Damage to Sewer Lines

Old sewer lines are often made of cast iron and clay piping, which are likely to break down and crack.

When sewer lines are damaged, wastewater will have nowhere to go, and most of it will build up in the line and cause a backup.

3. Tree Roots Growing into Pipes or Septic System

Tree roots are often a culprit of damaged or cracked sewer lines. Tree roots are naturally drawn to water, so if there are any small leaks, tree roots will grow towards them.

Once the tree root reaches the pipe, it can start to grow through the pipes, creating a blockage that eventually causes a backup.

4. Overflowing Septic Tank

If a septic tank becomes flooded with too much water at once, it can overflow.

An overflowing septic tank will not be able to take any more water, pushing wastewater back into the house and causing a sewage backup.

5. Heavy Rains or Flooding

When neighborhoods receive a large amount of rain, the municipal sewer system collects all of the runoff and could reach its maximum capacity.

If the municipal sewer system becomes overfilled, excess water can flow backward into your home’s sewer line and cause a backup.

How To Prevent Sewage Backups in Westport, CT

There are a few steps that you can take as a homeowner to prevent a sewer backup.

  1. Only flush toilet paper - Flushing any items other than toilet paper can damage the plumbing and local sewer or septic systems. Items such as feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, and diapers should never be flushed down the toilet.
  2. Never wash cooking grease or oil down the drain - Grease solidifies once it cools and will accumulate in your drains or lines, eventually causing a blockage. Other solid materials, like food scraps, coffee grounds, and hair, can also clog your sewer lines and cause a backup.
  3. Replace your sewer line with plastic pipes - The clay or cast iron piping used in older homes are especially prone to cracks. Switching to durable, plastic pipes will help protect your sewer line from becoming cracked or damaged.
  4. Install a backwater prevention valve - Backwater prevention valves allow sewage to go out, but not come back in. Having a plumber install a backwater prevention valve will prevent backups from the main sewer line, but not from your own service line.

Preventing Flooded Basements in Weston, CT

10/18/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded basement in Weston, Ct. Preventing basement flooding in Weston, CT can be easier if homeowners take the proper steps.

Nearly all basements will experience flooding or water damage at some point. Although it's not something homeowners expect, it can happen at any time.

When water floods your basement, it can cause serious issues throughout your entire property, including damage to your walls and floors, cracks in your foundation, and more.

So how can homeowners help to avoid flooded basements in Weston, CT? Here, we will outline why your basement is flooding, how to handle the water damage, as well as how to prevent flooded basements in the first place.

Need Flooded Basement Cleanup in Weston, CT? Call Us 24/7 - 203-707-1952

Why Is Your Basement Flooding?

There are several reasons why your basement may be flooding. The most common causes include:

  1. Leaking or burst water heater
  2. Heavy rains
  3. Excessive snow melt
  4. Burst pipes
  5. Sewage backups

1. Water Heaters

Hot water heaters are one of the most common appliances to cause water damage inside your home. When proper maintenance is neglected, water heaters are likely to leak or burst, which can cause up to 40 to 120 gallons of water to flood your basement.

2. Heavy Rains

Since basements are located at the base of your home, they are inherently prone to flooding during periods of storms or heavy rains. When the ground around your home’s foundation becomes saturated, gravity helps water force its way through the concrete and into your basement.

If there are cracks in your foundation or improperly installed windows, water can also slip through that way.

3. Excessive Snow Melt

When warmer weather follows after large snow storms, any snow that is piled up around your home can quickly melt, allowing water to pool around and seep into your foundation.

4. Burst Pipes

When a water pipe bursts inside your home, it can cause extensive flooding or water damage.

There are several reasons why a pipe may burst, such as water freezing inside your pipes, high water pressure, and old or corroded pipes.

5. Sewage Backups

Depending on where they take place inside your home, sewage backups or toilet overflows are also another common cause of flooded basements. Most sewage backups are due to:

  • Broken sewer lines
  • Roots growing into sewer pipes
  • Flushing items like diapers or sanitary napkins down the toilet
  • Heavy rains

What To Do When Your Basement Floods

  1. Don't immediately enter a flooded crawl space or basement! The most important step is making sure that the affected area is safe to enter. If there’s a substantial amount of standing water, you should turn off your electricity and gas first.
  2. Determine the source of the water. In order to figure out your next steps, you need to understand where the source of the water is coming from. If the flooding is due to heavy rains, you should wait until the storm ends and water stops flowing into your basement. If you’re dealing with a burst pipe, sewage backup, or burst hot water heater, turn off your water immediately.
  3. Begin removing water. If there are only small puddles of water, you can use a wet dry vacuum, towels, or a mop and bucket. If there's a few inches or more of standing water, we recommend calling a professional basement water removal company. SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield uses specialized equipment to quickly extract all water from your basement to help mitigate damages.
  4. Dry out your basement as well as possible. Remove any wet belongings so they can dry, and set up any fans or dehumidifiers you have. If there was a lot of standing water for an extended period of time, SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield can help with our advanced equipment and moisture meters to make sure your basement is completely dry.
  5. Begin the cleaning process. Since water damage can often leave behind dirt, bacteria, and mold spores, it’s important to make sure that all affected surfaces have been properly sanitized. This step also helps to prevent the growth of mold or mildew, as well as any unwanted odors.
  6. Fix the cause of your flooded basement. You want to take preventative measures to make sure your basement won’t flood again.

How To Prevent Flooded Basements in Weston, CT

Water in your basement can often be avoided through regular upkeep, maintenance, and visual inspections.

  1. Have Your Water Heater Serviced Once Per Year - While it’s often forgotten, maintaining your hot water heater helps to remove sediment and other debris that have accumulated over time. Having a professional service your water heater once per year can dramatically decrease the chances that it will malfunction or leak.
  2. Waterproof Your Basement - There are several ways to waterproof your basement. Some methods involve directing water away from your home’s foundation and installing a sump pump or floor drain. Since basement waterproofing can be dangerous, we recommend seeking help from a professional waterproofing company.
  3. Take Steps to Prevent Burst Pipes - Water discoloration and low water pressure are a couple of key indicators of aged or corroded pipes that could leak or burst. It’s especially important to take notice of your water pipes during the winter because of freezing temperatures.
  4. Be Cautious of What You Flush Down the Toilet - A common cause of sewage backups is flushing improper items down the toilet, like diapers or sanitary napkins.

6 Tips to Avoid Water Damage in Weston, CT

1. Inspect Your Appliances

One of the leading causes of water damage in your home is leaking appliances, such as hot water heaters, washing machines, refrigerators, and AC units. However, through regular visual inspections of water supply lines and maintenance, you can detect damages early to complete needed repairs or replacements before issues arise.

2. Keep Gutters Flowing Freely

When gutters become filled with twigs, leaves, and other debris, water is unable to flow from your roof and away from your foundation. Clogged gutters often cause water to spill over and seep through your roof and the walls of your home, and even contribute to the formation of ice dams in the winter.

Cleaning your gutter at least twice per year allows water to continue to flow through normally and away from your house.

3. Inspect Your Roof

Catching signs of roof damage early is key to protecting your home from storms and water leaks.

A proper roof inspection involves examining both your roof’s exterior for damaged or loose shingles, as well as the interior for water stains, mold, and more. Once you identify any signs of roof damage, completing the needed repairs or replacements will help to prevent future water damage from outside elements.

4. Waterproof Your Basement

With about 98 percent of basements experiencing flooding at some point in their lifetime, basement water damage is quite common.

There are various ways to help waterproof your basement, such as filling cracks in your foundation, sealing interior walls with waterproof paint, and taking steps to direct water away from your foundation.

Another effective method involves installing a sump pump or floor drain, which helps to pump excess water out of your basement and away from your property.

5. Prevent Pipes From Freezing

During the colder months, it’s common to experience water damage from burst pipes.

To prevent water from freezing inside your pipes, cover exposed pipes with insulation, keep faucets running, and maintain an indoor temperature of at least 55 degrees.

6. Locate the Main Water Supply Valve

One of the most important ways to prevent water damage in your home is knowing where your main water shut-off valve is.

Being able to quickly locate and turn off your water supply allows you to stop water from continuing to leak or spread after discovering a burst pipe or leaking appliance.

Water Damage From Your Refrigerator: Causes and What To Do

3/31/2021 (Permalink)

fridge leaking water on floor causing water damage in Fairfield County, CT When your fridge leaks and causes water damage to the floor of your kitchen in Fairfield County, CT you need to take immediate action.

Water damage from your fridge can be a tricky situation for your Fairfield County kitchen, namely because you usually don't realize your fridge is leaking water until it's already caused noticeable damages. Since you can't see under or behind the fridge, you're only likely to catch the problem if a large puddle forms on your kitchen floor.

So what do you do when your fridge is leaking water onto the floor? Here we will outline why your fridge is leaking, how to handle water damage from your fridge, how to prevent your it from leaking in the first place.

What Causes Refrigerators to Leak?

In most cases, leaks from your fridge start small and worsen over time, since you're not likely to notice them. When you finally discover the leak, you want to figure out what's causing it as soon as possible to prevent further damages from occurring.

The most common causes of fridges leaking water include:

  1. Clogged defrost drain
  2. Damaged defrost drain pan
  3. Water Dispenser
  4. Ice maker leak
  5. Excess condensation

1.  Clogged Defrost Drain

Most refrigerators will periodically defrost automatically. When they do, the excess water drains through a drain hole in the back of the fridge into a small tube which discharges in the drain pan.

This drain can become clogged when debris or food particles get into the tubing during a defrost cycle. When it becomes clogged, the next time the defrost cycle runs, melted water will back up in the freezer, down into the fridge, and cause a puddle on your floor.

2.  Damaged Defrost Drain Pan

It's normal for water to accumulate in the drain pan underneath your fridge. There's usually enough time between defrosting cycles for this water to evaporate away.

But, when the drain pan is cracked, split, or damaged in some way, it'll cause water from the drain hose to leak right onto the floor.

3.  Water Dispenser Leak

If your refrigerator has a water filter or dispenser, these can begin to leak. These leaks can be caused by improper installation, incorrect water filter use, or even old age can cause a connection to fail.

4.  Ice Maker Leak

Similar to a faulty water filter, ice maker water lines can detach or become damaged which will cause the component to leak. This may simply be due to cracks or loose plumbing connections.

5.  Excess Condensation

When your fridge has higher than normal condensation levels, it can cause it to start leaking. Excess condensation can be caused by weak seals or gaskets which work to keep cool air in the fridge and warm air out.

When warm air leaks into the appliance, it also makes the unit work harder to keep everything cold. When this occurs, excess condensation can be created on the coils behind the fridge, causing water to drip down onto the floor or even affect the wall behind the fridge.

What To Do When Your Fridge Leaks Water

When you notice that your fridge is leaking water, immediately take the following steps to prevent water damage or mold growth in the kitchen floor of your Connecticut home.

Clean up puddles of water.

Before doing anything else, you want to clean up and contain as much water as your can to prevent it from seeping into flooring, walls, or even cabinetry. Use towels, mops, or a wet dry vacuum to get up as much water as you can. Then, put down towels to catch any additional leaking water.

Inspect the refrigerator.

Take note of where it seems the leak is coming from and start your inspection there. Many times homeowners can repair a leaking fridge themselves. You may need to clean out the defrost drain line, replace the drain pan, tighten seals or connections, or level off the fridge. If you can't diagnose or repair the problem yourself, call a plumber or appliance repair company.

Inspect your home for signs of water damage or mold growth.

If you're lucky enough to catch a leak right when it starts, the extent of your damages may only be cleaning up a puddle. But, if your problem went unnoticed for weeks or months, you may actually have serious water damage on the floor underneath the fridge or the wall behind it.

Inspect the following areas of your home for signs of water or mold damage:

  • Behind the fridge
  • Underneath the fridge
  • Any cabinetry adjacent to the fridge
  • The ceiling below where the refrigerator is located

If you find signs of water damage or mold in these areas, you should call a local water damage restoration company in Fairfield County to inspect your damages and help decide what needs to be done to restore your home.

Preventing Your Fridge From Leaking

  • Regularly inspect the area around your fridge for signs of leaks.
  • Don't ignore excess condensation forming inside the fridge, as it can be a sign of a larger problem.
  • Make sure that the fridge is level.
  • Replace water lines which have plastic tubing with steel supply lines.
  • Place a water alarm underneath the fridge. These go off when they come in contact with water and are helpful to alert you of leaks in places you can't see.

How To Handle Dishwasher Leak Water Damage In Your Home

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

dishwasher leak water damage cleanup near me in connecticut Dealing with the water damage from a dishwasher leak in Connecticut may require assistance from SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield.

Many Connecticut households use their dishwashers every single day without a second thought about them leaking.

But when dishwashers do leak, they can quickly flood your entire kitchen and cause water to seep into cabinets and under floors. To prevent serious issues, the water damage from a dishwasher leak should be cleaned up as soon as possible.

Here, we will review what to do if your dishwasher leaks, why your dishwasher is leaking, and whether or not insurance will cover the cost of water damage restoration.

What To Do When Your Dishwasher Causes Water Damage

Even though dishwashers only use an average of 6 gallons of water per load, if water leaks while it's running you can still end up with serious water damage, especially if you don't take steps to immediately clean up the water in Fairfield County.

1.  Look For Electrical Hazards

Before you start cleaning up, be sure to take a look around the kitchen to make sure water hasn't affected any electrical appliances or outlets. If you're not sure - turn off the power to your kitchen before doing anything else.

2.  Clean Up Standing Water

This step should be completed as soon as possible to prevent water from the dishwasher from leaking under the floor, affecting the subflooring, and causing mold growth.

Grab any towels, mops, and buckets you may have in your home to begin soaking up water. If possible, pull out the dishwasher and other kitchen appliances to make sure you get any water that's stuck underneath them.

3.  Closely Inspect Your Kitchen For Water Damage

Unfortunately, cleaning up dishwasher leak water damage isn't as easy as just mopping up some water. It's possible that water has affected kitchen cabinets, gotten underneath the flooring or caused water damage to hardwood floors, or soaked into drywall and baseboards.

You should closely inspect all of these areas for signs of moisture, bubbling, discoloration, or mold growth. If you find any signs that water damage has spread across your kitchen, you must take steps to have it all fully addressed. This may include cutting into walls, pulling up flooring, and setting up fans and dehumidifiers to ensure everything is properly dried out.

4.  Call A Water Damage Company in Connecticut for Damage Inspection

If you're not certain you've gotten rid of all hidden moisture after your dishwasher leaked, you should call a local water damage restoration company to perform an inspection. Using advanced technology, these companies can detect and measure the levels of moisture in floors, walls, and behind cabinets. This allows them to create a drying plan to ensure all wet areas are completely restored in your Connecticut home.

Why Is Your Dishwasher Leaking?

There are many possible causes of dishwasher water damage in CT. With some detective work, you can likely figure out the cause of your appliance leak and whether or not you need to call a professional to repair it.

Leaky Dishwasher Door

If water is accumulating at the front of the dishwasher, this may be the culprit of your leak. Check the door latch of the dishwasher and make sure that it actually closes all the way. If you dishwasher opens too easily, it could be a sign of a faulty door latch that needs a simple replacement.

If the door latch isn't causing the leak, it may be the door gasket which essentially seals the dishwasher when you close it. Open your dishwasher and inspect the seal around the door. If you notice any rips, holes, loose, or worn out sections, you should purchase a new gasket and replace it before using the dishwasher again.

Leaky Dishwasher Tub

Over time, it's possible for the bottom of your dishwasher tub to corrode and cause water to seep out over time. If this is the cause of your leak, you should call a repairman to see if the damage to your dishwasher can be repaired. If not, you'll need to purchase a new one.

Loose or Cracked Water Supply Lines and Valves

It's always possible that hoses, water supply lines, or seals become loose or have deteriorated over time. If valves get stuck or break, they can also cause dishwasher flooding. You should check that all hoses, clamps, and valves are completely sealed and in the proper places. If they're damaged, these things can be easily replaced after taking a trip to the hardware store.

Dishwasher Isn't Level

If your dishwasher was installed improperly or shifted over time, it can cause it to leak. Find a level and place it on the bottom of the machine and adjust it as needed.

Used the Wrong Detergent

Not all soap is equal! You must use detergents or soaps designed specifically for use in dishwashers. Using regular dish soap can cause an excess amount of foam and overflow the dishwasher.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Water Damage From Dishwashers?

In most cases, leaking dishwasher water damage should be covered by your insurance company, but you should always double-check your policy before filing a claim to be sure.

So long as the damage from your dishwasher was sudden and unforeseen, meaning that it was a result of mechanical or plumbing issues, the damage should be covered. But, if your insurance adjuster assesses damages and your dishwasher shows signs of neglected maintenance that could've prevented the problem, your claim may end up being denied.

Filing a claim for water damage from a dishwasher is usually a good idea so that you can have a professional water damage repair company properly clean up water and dry your kitchen floor, cabinets, and other areas as needed.

How To Prevent Appliance Leaks and Water Damage

3/16/2021 (Permalink)

appliance water leak and water damage restoration near me fairfield county ct This dishwasher leak caused water damage to the kitchen floor and leaked into the basement below, requiring extensive water damage restoration.

Water damage caused by leaking appliances can pose a significant threat to your home in Fairfield County. Essentially, any appliance in your home which utilizes water can increase your risk for flood damage.

Here, we will review the top appliances that can cause flooding in your home, ways to prevent this damage from occurring, and when water damage caused by appliances is covered by your insurance company.

Hot Water Heater

As your water heater ages, it becomes more and more likely for it to spring a leak and damage your home. The average life expectancy for water heaters is only 8-15 years, with an estimated 75% failing before they’re even 12 years old.

When your water heater leaks or bursts, there's the possibility of up to 40 to 120 gallons of water to flood your home, depending on the model you have.

Causes of hot water heater failure include:

  • Loose drain valve
  • Too much pressure in the tank can cause it to burst or crack
  • Old tanks can naturally deteriorate and leak
  • Too much sediment in the tank
  • Corroded anode rod

Washing Machine

The average washing machine uses 19 gallons of water per load. This may not seem like a lot, but when a water supply hose cracks or detaches from the machine, the water can come pouring out into your home, seeping through floors, walls, and ceilings. The most common cause of washing machine water damage is a failed supply hose, which on average fails after 8.7 years.

Refrigerator

Like other appliance leaks and water damage, refrigerator leaks can be caused by many different things. If your fridge has a water filter or ice maker with a water supply line that was incorrectly installed, it can leak for weeks before you even realize. Another common cause is a faulty or clogged defrost drain, which will cause water to spill right on to the floor.

Dishwasher

While dishwashers may not hold as much water as other household appliances, they can still cause a significant amount of damage to your home. When they leak on to the floor, water can quickly seep underneath it and into the rooms below.

Causes of dishwasher leaks include:

  • Leaking dishwasher door
  • Leaking or cracked tub
  • Loose or cracked water hoses or clamps
  • Using the incorrect or too much detergent

Air Conditioner

Air conditioners are most likely to cause water damage over time, meaning that you aren’t likely to notice the leak right away. Depending on where your air conditioning unit is located in your home, you may not notice any issues until major damage has already been done.

The most common causes of an air conditioner leaking include:

  • Clogged or disconnected drain
  • Dirty condensate pump
  • Clogged air filter
  • Dirty evaporator coil
  • Cracked drain pan
  • Low refrigerant
  • Condensation buildup within ductwork

Preventing Water Damage From Leaking Appliances

When you take steps to perform regular maintenance and visual inspections around your home in Fairfield County, water damage caused by leaking appliances is more likely to be avoided.

  1. Inspect Water Supply Lines - You should keep a monthly schedule to perform visual inspections of all water supply lines in your home. This simple task can help you identify any signs of clogged, damaged, or deteriorating water lines before they begin to leak and cause damage to your home, and doesn’t even need the help of a professional.
  2. Keep Track of When Supply Line Hoses Should Be Replaced - In addition to performing visual inspections, you should replace all water hoses before the average time that they are expected to fail.
  3. Have Your Water Heater Inspected Once Per Year - Over time, sediment and other debris can build up in your hot water heater which can cause the appliance to malfunction and leak. You can follow the manufacturer's directions to flush out the heater tank yourself or call a local plumber. It may be best to have a professional inspect your water heater, as there may be internal elements that you can’t inspect yourself.
  4. Have Your HVAC System Serviced Once Per Year - Since HVAC systems are more complex than other appliances in your home, it can be harder to tell based on visual inspections if something is wrong. Having your system inspected by an HVAC professional once per year can help prevent air conditioner leaks and water damage.
  5. Follow All Manufacturer Guidelines - You can help prevent water damage from washing machines or dishwashers by simply using the correct detergents and not overloading the appliances, as these are major causes of their failures.

Is Water Damage Caused By Leaking Appliances Covered By Insurance?

For the most part, your homeowners insurance policy should cover water damage caused by appliances. These damages are covered when caused by sudden and unforeseen water damage. This means that if you were negligent in keeping up the appliance or ignored a leak for months, your insurance company will not cover the damage restoration.

This also means your insurance may not cover regular wear and tear if your insurance adjuster decides that your damages could have been avoided by performing regular maintenance. Leaking appliance insurance claims can get complicated if it isn't clear the damage suddenly and unexpectedly happened.

Times when your claim should be covered include:

  • Hot water heater leak or burst
  • Washing machine overflow
  • HVAC leaks
  • Dishwasher leaks
  • Ice maker line leaks

What To Do When Your Basement Floods in Weston, CT

When you're dealing with basement flooding, take the following steps to help prevent further flood damage until help arrives.

1. Find and Stop the Source of Water

The faster you're able to find and stop the source of water that's entering the basement, the more damages you can prevent.

Before entering a flooded basement, be sure that there are no electrical or safety hazards.

  • If flooding is from a water leak or burst pipe, turn the main water supply off.
  • If flooding is caused by heavy rains or natural disasters, do the best you can to contain flood water until the flow stops using buckets, towels, or wet dry vacuums.

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

toilet overflow water damage cleanup near me in westport, connecticut When your toilet overflows in Westport, CT, contaminated water can flood your bathroom and leak to other areas of your home.

When your toilet backs up and overflows, it can create a huge mess in your Westport, CT property.  When toilet water damage affects your home or business, you should call a water damage restoration company to handle the contaminated toilet water and sewage cleanup.

The flood damage from a backed-up toilet should be immediately addressed to prevent further water damage or contamination in your Westport property. That's why SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield responds 24/7 for your toilet overflow cleanup emergency.

What To Do When Your Toilet Overflows

When you take the following steps, it can help minimize the water damage from a toilet overflow.

Stop the Toilet Overflow

Before you can start cleaning up, you need to first stop the overflow. To stop a flooding toilet, try the following:

  • Remove the toilet tank lid
  • Push down the flapper valve (rubber flap inside the tank) to stop clean water from filling the toilet bowl
  • Lift the float to stop the tank fill valve from refilling the toilet tank - This should stop the flooding
  • If the toilet does not stop, turn off the water supply by turning off the valve behind the toilet on the wall

Clean Up Standing Water

Before you jump into cleaning, you should note what type of water you're dealing with.

  • Category 1 "Clean Water" - Water from a clean source such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet.
  • Category 2 "Grey Water" - Water which has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested from sources like washing machines, toilet overflow with some urine but no feces.
  • Category 3 "Black Water" - This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

If the toilet overflows with clean water, you should immediately grab any towels, rags, or mops to begin cleaning up. Depending on the extent of the flooded toilet water damage, water may seep into the floor and ceiling below, spreading damages around your home. In this case, call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield.

Clear the Toilet Clog

Before unclogging the toilet, remove some of the water with a bucket so that while you plunge, water doesn't splash all over you and your bathroom. If unclogging your toilet doesn't stop the overflow, you may actually be dealing with a sewage backup or a clog in a drain pipe or sewer line of your plumbing system. In this case, you will need to call a plumber for assistance.

Clean and Sanitize All Affected Areas

After your toilet overflows, there is likely bacteria and other contaminants in your bathroom. Be sure to wear gloves and other safety materials while sanitizing all affected areas of the bathroom with a mixture of bleach.

When Do You Need To Call A Professional For Toilet Overflow Water Damage Cleanup?

When any of these situations arise, it's in the best interest for your health, safety, and your home to call a professional for flooded toilet cleaning and restoration services.

How To Handle Ceiling Leaks From Ice Dams

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

ceiling leak from ice dam in connecticut near me When ceiling leaks from ice dams cause major water damage and mold growth in your Connecticut home, we're Here to Help!

During the snowy winter months in Fairfield County, Connecticut, ice dams and winter roof leaks can become a serious issue for homeowners. When your ceiling leaks from snow, you may not be sure exactly what to do. Here, we will review what to do when you have a ceiling leak from an ice dam in Connecticut.

7 Steps To Handle Ceiling Leaks From An Ice Dam

1.  Take Immediate Action

When you realize an ice dam has formed on your roof, you shouldn't ignore it. If you do, the ice dam can cause your roof to leak and allow melted snow and ice to find its way into your home. If you're already dealing with a ceiling leak from snow in Fairfield County, act quickly to prevent extensive water damage, mold growth, or structural deterioration inside of your home.

2.  Contain the Ceiling Water Leak

To help prevent water from migrating to other parts of your home or through floors, gather any buckets, pots, towels, or tarps you may have to catch leaking water. Move any furniture or rugs away from the ceiling leak to protect them from water damage.

If you're dealing with a large water bubble in the ceiling, poke a small hole into it and drain the water into a large can, rather than letting it burst on its own. This way, you can control where the excess water goes.

3.  Call a Local Ice Dam Removal Company

If you don't remove the ice dam on your roof in Connecticut, the trapped melted snow and ice will only continue to leak into your attic and trickle down to your living spaces. This means that any efforts you make to clean up ceiling leaks or remove excess moisture will be ruined until the ice dam melts by itself.

When it comes to removing an ice dam, there are many DIY methods. For the safety of yourself and the roof of your home, we always advise hiring a professional for ice dam removal. When your roof is covered in snow and ice, climbing on it can be extremely dangerous. Then, chipping off ice with a mallet can also break or dislodge your roof shingles, making your roof damages worse.

A professional ice dam removal company should utilize a steam machine, which melts ice dams off of your roof. This method is the safest, fastest, and most effective.

4.  Call A Water Damage Restoration Company in Connecticut

Once you've arranged for the ice dam to be removed by a professional, your next call should be to your local water damage cleanup company, like SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield. A water damage restoration company in Fairfield County can completely restore your home to pre-damage conditions, addressing all areas of moisture or mold growth.

A professional water damage company is needed after a ceiling leak from an ice dam because of how much damage they can cause to your home. Water and moisture can cause serious water damage such as sagging ceilings or walls, wood rot, or warped floors, along with mold growth and wet insulation. Without taking the proper steps to address water damage in your home, you can end up with much worse damages in the future.

5.  File An Insurance Claim

Many customers ask: Are ice dams covered by homeowner's insurance? Luckily, ceiling leaks from ice dams are covered by your insurance policy. Your insurance company should cover the costs of water or structural damages caused by ice or snow leaks.

You will still need to pay out of pocket for ice dam removal as your insurance company will not cover it, which is around $1,000.

6.  Have Your Roof Inspected and Repaired

If you've had an ice dam roof leak, you need to take steps to have your roof repaired so that you can prevent further leaks. Once an ice dam causes water to leak into your home, it has likely created a space for water to also enter your home after heavy rains.

Contact a local roofing contractor in Connecticut to look for dark patches, missing shingles, damaged shingles, wet attic insulation, roof sagging and more to create a repair plan for your roof in Weston.

7.  Take Steps To Prevent Further Ice Dams

If an ice dam has formed once, it's likely to form again after the next big snowstorm if you take no action to prevent them. You don't want your home to sustain water damage every time it snows in Fairfield County.

To prevent ice dams on your roof, try some of the following tips:

  • Use a roof rake to remove snow on the roof before it has a chance to melt
  • Better insulate your attic to prevent warm air from leaking in from the living space
  • To prevent a warm roof, have a ventilation system installed which keeps the roof structure cool
  • Clean your gutters so that melting snow can easily flow off the roof
  • Make sure that no exhaust fans or air ducts are expelling warm air into the attic

Flooded Basement: Frequently Asked Questions

Is basement flooding covered by homeowner's insurance?

Insurance coverage for a flooded basement depends on the source of water. Water in your basement is covered by insurance when: flooding is due to a burst, frozen, or leaking pipe; appliance malfunctions; or flooding due to plumbing issues.

Flooded basements are usually not covered by insurance if caused by groundwater seeping through basement walls or if your sump pump fails. If your basement is prone to flooding, look into additional flood insurance or basement waterproofing methods.

How much does it cost to repair a flooded basement?

If you're not going through insurance, basement water damage restoration can on average cost anywhere from $3,000-$10,000, depending on the amount of water in the basement and what type of materials are affected.

Is a flooded basement dangerous?

A flooded basement in Westport isn’t necessarily dangerous - but there are possible safety hazards such as electrical appliances submerged in water, gas leaks, or mold growth that can cause health effects.

Our Frozen and Burst Pipe Restoration Cleanup Services in Westport

When you call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield after a water pipe bursts, we quickly spring into action to provide emergency burst pipe cleanup services. While every water damage cleanup is a unique situation, you can expect the following general cleanup process:

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

When you connect with a SERVPRO representative, they will ask the following questions to ensure our emergency response team is prepared once they arrive on your property:

  • When did this occur?
  • What was the source of your flooding?
  • What areas of your home have been affected by water?
  • How much standing water is currently in your home?
  • Is the water source still flowing/Have you turned off the water supply?
  • Is there any mold growth?
  • Have you filed an insurance claim?

Step 2 - Water Removal and Extraction

Once crews arrive on site, they will begin to rapidly remove any standing water in your property using commercial grade water extractors. The faster this is started, the more likely it is that building materials like carpeting, floor boards, or drywall can be saved.

Step 3 - Equipment Set Up

Commercial grade drying equipment is set up throughout your home. This may include air movers, dehumidifiers, or floor mats to ensure all affected areas are properly dried. Equipment is not removed until it has been confirmed by a moisture reading that the area is dry.

Step 4 - Demolition (As needed)

In the case of burst pipes, there is likely to be some level of demolition in your home since pipes burst behind walls or ceilings. These areas must be opened up to ensure no moisture is left behind, which could produce mold growth in your home.

Step 5 - Mold Remediation (As needed)

When it comes to water damage, mold growth is always a possibility. Mold may be present in your home if a pipe had a slow water leak before bursting or when damages are not handled right away.

  • Did you know? Mold can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours after water damage.

Step 6 - Restoration

Once your Project Manager has confirmed your property is dry and the water damage cleanup process complete, restoration can begin. Our in-house construction team can handle any needed painting, drywall replacement, carpet replacement, and more to return your home to pre-damage conditions.

Causes of Roof Water Leaks

There are many reasons your roof may cause interior water damage, but the leading causes are:

  1. Missing or Broken Shingles
  2. Ice Dams
  3. Damaged Flashing
  4. Clogged Gutters

1 - Missing or Broken Shingles

After an intense storm, your roof may suffer from wind damage, hail damage, or impact damages. Wind damage can cause the shingles on your roof to raise up or even completely fly off your roof. Hail and impact damage can cause shingles to sustain small holes or crack. All of these damages weaken your roof, exposing the sheathing to rain and snow, causing roof leaks.

2 - Ice Dams

When ice dams form on your roof, they cause water to become trapped and back up underneath shingles. Over time, this water will leak through the roof and begin to enter your home. The weight of ice dams may also cause your roof or gutters to sag, pulling fascia and soffit away from the roof and creating a way for water to enter your home.

3 - Damaged Flashing

Roof flashing is used around areas like chimneys, vents, and skylights to navigate water away from roof features and prevent leaks. When flashing is damaged, it can let water and moisture enter your home when it rains or snow melts.

4 - Clogged Gutters

When you don't clean your gutters, they can become clogged and hold stagnant water. Shingles which are constantly in contact with water begin to deteriorate, allowing water to seep behind them and behind the roof deck. Clogged gutters also make it more likely for ice dams to form, which is another cause of roof leaks.

Roof Leaks and Water Damage

How do you know that you have a roof leak causing water damage in your Fairfield home? What should you do when you find a leak?

Common Signs of Roof Leak Water Damage

  • Rotting wood in attic
  • Rotting wood or mold around skylights
  • Water stains on ceilings or walls
  • Bubbling paint on walls or ceilings
  • Buckling ceilings or walls
  • Musty smells in attic
  • Mold growing on attic insulation
  • Wet insulation
  • Ceiling leaks during rainstorms

What To Do When Your Roof Leaks

1 - Try to contain the damages

If your roof starts leaking in the middle of a rainstorm, the first thing you should do is try to contain the water. Move any furniture out of the way of the, and set up a tarp and bucket to catch leaking water. Be mindful that water may leak into electrical components such as light fixtures and pose a fire or shock hazard.

2 - Call your insurance company

Depending on the extent of the water damage from your leaking roof, you may need water damage restoration services on top of roof repair services. This can become a costly process, making filing an insurance claim the next best step to ensure you can get the needed repair services as soon as possible.

3 - Call a roofing company

A roofing contractor will be able to find the cause of your leak and provide roof leak repair services. You'll want to have the source of your problem addressed before you move on to repairing the water damage from your leak.

4 - Call a local water damage restoration company

Since roof leaks can cause water to affect so many different areas of your home, it's best to call in the professionals for roof leak water damage repair rather than handling the repairs yourself. Water Heater Flooded Basement - What To Do

12/16/2020 (Permalink)

water heater flooded basement. standing water in front of furnace and water heating in basement A leaking water heater can flood your entire basement.

Did you know that 75% of hot water heaters fail before they're even 12 years old? This means that gallons of water are likely to leak or burst from the water heater and cause flooding in your home.

So what do you do when your water heater causes basement flooding? Here we will review everything you need to know about water heaters and flooded basements, including why it happens and how to prevent it.

What To Do When Your Water Heater Floods Your Basement

1.  Be mindful of any safety hazards.

If the water heater caused major flooding in your basement to the extent that is is submerged in water, move forward with caution. There is always the hazard of electrocution in flood water that has appliances submerged in it. Flooding can also cause gas leaks, which is applicable when you have a gas water heater or heating system. For extra precautions, turn off the electricity and gas to the home.

2.  Turn off the water.

This will prevent further flooding depending on where the water is coming out of the water heater.

  • If the water heater is leaking from the pressure relief valve, or the heater tank has burst, turning off the water will be the only way to stop the flow of water. Even after a water heater bursts, the cold water pipe will continue to deliver 5 to 15 gallons of water to the heater every minute.
  • If the water heater has a leak from the tank itself but hasn't burst, turning off the water will not completely stop the leak as it is full of 40 gallons or more of water. In these cases, you must connect the hose to the drain valve and drain the tank.

3.  Remove standing water from the basement.

For a small amount of water from a small water heater leak, you can use a wet dry vacuum, a mop, bucket, and towels. For larger amounts of water (2+ inches across the entire basement), you can try to use a submersible portable sump pump to pump water out of the basement. Open a window for the runoff water and be sure it is flowing away from the home.

  • If your basement sustains major flooding and this step cannot be done yourself, call a water damage restoration company. They use commercial grade equipment that will quickly remove all water from your basement. These companies are also approved by your homeowners insurance, allowing the complete clean up of water without any money coming out of your pocket.

4.  Call your insurance company and file a claim.

The one good thing about water heaters flooding a basement is that the damages are covered by your homeowners insurance. Your insurance company will inform you of next steps to take, such as calling a flood damage restoration company to ensure the flood is properly and completely cleaned up. These companies take steps to ensure your basement and any affected materials are completely dried after water damage to prevent the growth of mold or create structural issues.

5.  Call your plumber.

Sometimes this will be the first step you take, while other times this will be the last. This step depends on the extent of flooding from your hot water heater. If there is a small flood that you're cleaning up yourself, you'll want to call the plumber right away to fix the issue and return hot water to your home.

In the case where a water heater causes a flooded basement, you'll have to wait to call your plumber until the flood water has been cleaned up by the water damage restoration company. The plumber will not want to repair your water heater in a foot of water, and it is not safe for them to do so either.

Depending on the cause of your water heater leak, you may need to repair or replace your water heater.

How to Prevent Water Heater From Flooding Basement

Taking steps to prevent a leaking or burst water heater can end up saving you thousands out of pocket or in insurance claims. Take the following steps to help prevent and minimize damages from a leaking water heater:

  • Install a drain pan that drains outside of your home
  • Install a leak detector that will automatically turn off the water when a leak is detected
  • Flush out the water heater regularly
  • Immediately repair or replace any faulty or leaking components
  • Have it inspected immediately after the warranty has expired and continue annually until a professional recommends it be replaced
  • Keep an eye out for small leaks that can become catastrophic later
  • Learn the signs that your water heater is failing:
    • Abnormal noises, such as popping or rumbling
    • Gas smell from a gas water heater, indicating some sort of gas line leak
    • Leaks
    • Hot water has flakes or rust or sediment in it
    • Water heater is rusty

Handling Water Damage From Overflowing Toilet

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

toilet overflow cleanup near me fairfield ct When your toilet overflows and floods your home, there's a lot of water damage it can cause.

The water damage from a toilet overflow is something that most homeowners tend to overlook when it first happens. Many don't realize the extent of the damage until the toilet leaks through the bathroom floor and causes water stains to the ceiling below. Here, we will review everything you need to know about flooded toilets and water damage.

For immediate toilet overflow cleanup in Connecticut, call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield 24/7 - 203-707-1952

What Causes A Toilet To Overflow & How To Stop It

In order to stop the overflow and reduce the damage done to your home, you should understand the different reasons why toilets overflow. When you know the cause of your overflow, you'll be able to take the best course of action to stop the water as soon as possible and prevent a flooded bathroom.

Toilet Overflows After Flushing

When this happens, it means that the toilet drain is clogged and isn't allowing waste and toilet water to drain properly or the vent pipe is clogged. Many people have experienced this, and hopefully you can catch it before the water spills over the side of the toilet bowl and floods your home.

To stop the water from a clogged toilet drain, you can open the toilet tank and press down on the flapper valve to stop the flow of water to the toilet bowl. Then, lift the float to prevent the tank itself from refilling. These steps should stop the toilet from overflowing on to the bathroom floor and allow you to use a flange plunger to clear the clog.

Your toilet can also overflow after flushing because of the vent pipe. The vent pipe delivers the air needed for the toilet to properly flush. When this vent pipe is blocked, the toilet will not flush properly and be at risk of overflowing. This cause of an overflow is not something you can fix yourself - You'll have to call a plumber for help and not use the toilet until they arrive.

Toilet Overflows Without Flushing

If the water in your toilet keeps rising by itself, causing it overflow, you're likely dealing with a clog somewhere in the drain pipe of your plumbing system either in the main drain or sewer line. If you have a septic tank, the issue may also be that it is full. When this happens, your home is at risk of a sewage backup. This is because when the water exiting your house has nowhere to go because of a clog in the main line, it backflows to the lowest point in the system which is usually your toilet. This will cause it to repeated overflow without even flushing.

When the toilet water rises without flushing, the best thing to do is turn off the water supply line to the toilet, located on the wall directly behind it. You should also avoid using any water in your home until the blockage is cleared by a plumbing contractor, as it will have nowhere to go and backflow into your home.

Common Questions

What kind of water damage do toilet overflows cause?

Depending on where the affected bathroom is located in your home, there can be varying levels of damage.

  • Water damage to drywall, flooring, and baseboards of bathroom
  • Water damage and water stains on ceiling below bathroom
  • Wet insulation
  • Wet subfloor
  • Structural deterioration
  • Damaged electrical wiring

When you experience a toilet overflow that floods your bathroom, you should call in a water damage restoration company to inspect the damages and see what work needs to be done. When you just clean up standing water, you may be missing everything that has already seeped into the floor below that can cause major damage over time.

Is it safe to clean up a toilet overflow by yourself?

The answer to this depends on what type of water overflowed onto the bathroom floor. If the water was completely clear and clean from a toilet that overflowed without flushing, there should be no harm to you in cleaning it up yourself. But when a toilet overflows and contains water contaminated with urine, feces, or raw sewage - you should leave the cleanup to certified professionals. Contaminated water can make you extremely ill when you improperly handle it.

Toilet overflowed onto carpet?

Whenever a toilet overflows on to a carpet you should take the proper steps to have it cleaned, dried, and sanitized if possible. If it stays wet, the particles from toilet water may cause it to harbor harmful bacteria and produce mold growth.

Can a toilet overflow cause mold?

Yes, they can as any water damage event can produce mold in as little as 48 hours. That's why it's always best to act fast with flooded bathroom cleanup to prevent further damages to your home.

How To Quickly Dry Concrete After A Flood

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

water puddles on wet concrete floor Drying a wet concrete floor can be simple when you follow these steps.

When you experience flooding in a part of your home with concrete floors such as a garage, crawlspace, basement, or utility closet, you'll want to get the water cleaned up as soon as possible. And when you just have a large puddle or small amount of flooding, you may not want to file an insurance claim or pay a water damage restoration company to do it for you.

We've put together this guide to help explain how to dry concrete after a flood to save you an insurance claim or paying out of pocket. Follow these tips and your concrete floor should be dry in no time.

Drying Wet Concrete Floors

Move any furniture or carpets

This will make it much easier to dry the affected area. If you leave wet items in an area that you are trying to remove moisture from, they will only cause the process to take longer. Move items to a place where they can dry separately.

Remove all water

You'll want to remove as much flood water as possible. For large puddles or very shallow flooding, you can go to your local home improvement store to rent a wet-dry vacuum. Use this to suck up standing water. Then, use mops, towels, and buckets to sop up the rest of the water from the floor.

Clean & sanitize

You want to make sure that no dirt, debris, or bacteria is left behind from the flooding. This step can also help prevent mold growth after flooding or water damage. You can use a mop and cleaners such as castile soap, liquid dish soap, or mild floor cleaners. Create a cleaning solution, mop the floor with it, and then rinse with a mop and just water.

Start the drying process

Your concrete will not be completely dried just by sucking up the water and leaving it as is. Set up multiple fans and set them on high. You'll likely need more than one fan, as household models are not as strong as the ones water damage restoration companies use. Point the fans towards the wettest areas. If there are any small puddles, make sure that you see air movement on top of the water so you know it will evaporate and dry.

In addition to fans, you'll need to set up dehumidifiers. Once again, you'll likely need more than one to properly remove all the moisture from the air. You must use a dehumidifier along with your fans so that all excess moisture is eliminated and doesn't leave conditions that will produce mold growth. Be sure to pour out the water collection bucket or else the dehumidifiers will stop working and greatly slow down your drying process.

Leave fans and dehumidifiers out

If you check on your flood damaged concrete and notice there is no more standing water or puddles - don't turn your equipment off just yet. Although there may not be any visible water, it's likely the area still has a high level of moisture. At this point in the drying process, the water on the concrete floor has simply evaporated but is still present. You may turn fans off but it is a good idea to leave dehumidifiers running for a few days to make sure there is no lingering moisture.

  4. Higher than normal water bills. This can help tip you off that there is a water leak somewhere in your home. When you have an unexpectedly high bill, inspect your home for these other signs of water damage to find if you have hidden leak.
  5. Growth of mold and mildew. Mold can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours after a water leak or flooding. When water damage goes unaddressed, mold can end up being an indicator of t he problem and require extensive mold remediation.
  6. Soft floors, walls, or ceilings. When you find spongy areas in your home, they're likely completely saturated with water.
  7. Wet areas around your home. This sign is the most obvious - but if you ignore it, the damages will stack up.

What Causes Water Damage?

Like the signs of water damage, there are numerous (and what feels like infinite) causes of water damage.

  1. Leaking or burst pipes. Pipes may leak or break because of old age, changes in water pressure, or due to freezing in the winter.
  2. Roof leaks. Summer storms can rip off the shingles from your roof and ice dams in the winter can cause water to begin pouring into your home. Either way, a leaky roof can cause serious damage to the entirety of your home.
  3. HVAC units. This cause of water damage is much more common in the summer when ACs are high in use. Condensing units or pumps many times stop working and depending on its location, can flood your entire basement or require extensive ceiling repairs when in your attic.
  4. Plumbing issues. These types of issues are usually "hidden", meaning it's hard to tell that something is wrong until there are water stains on ceilings or walls. Toilet backups, shower valve leaks, leaks under sinks, or leaking toilets can all cause damage to your home.
  5. Worn or old household appliances. Our office receives a large amount of water damage calls that result from refrigerator ice lines leaking or failing, washing machines or water heaters letting go, or dishwashers letting out all their water on to hardwood floors. Have your appliances checked or maintenanced about every 7-10 years to avoid these causes of water damage.
  6. Flooding or storms. Large flooding events can cause a huge amount of water damage to your home that cannot be handled yourself.

What Should You Do Next?

If you've discovered water damage in your home, there are a few different routes you can take to clean up & repair it.

Option 1: DIY

For smaller water damage issues, you may be interested in doing the cleanup & repairs yourself. For example, if you had a small sink link that caused slight discoloration to the ceiling below, but you know that the source of the water is fixed and that it is not wet, you can handle it yourself. In these cases, you can usually just paint over the water stains with the correct type of paint.

Option 2: Call in the professionals & file an insurance claim

If your damage is any more than what was detailed under "DIY" route, it's probably best to call a water damage company to help you with the cleanup and repairs. Restoration companies have a system to ensure that your property is completely and property dried out after water damage - something that may not be guaranteed by doing it yourself!

What To Do When A Pipe Bursts In Your Fairfield Home

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

browning and bubbling from water damage ceiling from a burst pipe, moisture meter reading high moisture Burst pipes can cause a large amount of water damage in your home.

When you have a broken pipe in your home, it can quickly become an overwhelming nightmare. Walls, ceilings, and floors may be affected by water damage on multiple levels, along with your furniture and other personal belongings.

If you need immediate emergency assistance, call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield 24/7 - 203-707-1952

7 Steps To Take For Burst Pipe Cleanup

  1. Immediately turn the main water line off. You want to stop the water flow to prevent excess water from flooding your home. Also, you cannot begin to clean up water while it is still flowing.
  2. Call a plumber. They can find the burst pipe for you and repair it.
  3. Move any wet items from the flooded area. Move carpets, furniture, and other belongings to help speed their drying time, and clear the affected areas for cleanup.
  4. Begin to remove standing water as fast as possible. You can use a wet dry vacuum from Home Depot or Lowes to suck up water, or even use towels, mops, and buckets. If there's a large amount of standing water, you may need a water cleanup company to come in and extract the water with their commercial grade equipment instead.
  5. Begin drying out the flood-affected areas. You should set up fans on their highest settings and set up dehumidifiers to get as much excess moisture as you can. Unfortunately, in more severe water damage situations, household fans and dehumidifiers may not be able to get the job done. In this case, you may want to buy higher grade equipment from a hardware store or call in a water damage restoration company to set up their commercial grade equipment.
  6. Inspect the damaged areas. Look to see if drywall, ceilings, hardwood floor, or subfloor is water damaged or wet. If so, you may need to make flood cuts to help walls and ceilings dry, replace flooring, or call a restoration company with specialized equipment to restore your water damaged hardwood floors. If you aren't sure if your property is dry or not, you should call a water damage company to come out and take moisture readings - they will be able to tell you just how wet materials are.
  7. Perform any needed repairs. You may need to fix drywall, repaint, or install new carpets.

Why Is It So Important To Properly Dry Water Damage?

If you don't correctly handle water damage in your home and water or moisture is left behind, it's more than likely for mold to grow and require mold remediation, as well as the following:

  • Paint may bubble or blister
  • Wood flooring may warp, swell, or become moldy
  • Unwanted smells
  • Structural decay or dry rot

Check out our water damage timeline for more details!

Is a Burst Pipe Covered by Homeowner's Insurance?

In most cases, the damages caused by a broken pipe will be covered by your insurance company. They will likely not cover fixing the actual pipe, but they will cover the cleanup & repair of the damages caused by it. That means you may have to pay your plumber, but not the restoration service that comes out to clean up damages.

If you're unsure about your insurance coverage, our Project Managers can help you review your policy on site and help you make the decision on whether or not you should file your claim based on coverage and your deductible. If needed, they can even file the claim with you to ensure your loss is covered.

What Should You Do When Your Basement Floods?

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

groundwater flooding a finished basement, view from outside. Flooding in Fairfield can get to be overwhelming - Do you know what to do if your basement floods?

When you get home from a long day at work in Fairfield County, the last thing you want to find is a foot of water in your basement. Your furniture and other belongings may be submerged in water, carpets may be saturated or even floating, and your basement walls may take on moisture as well.

What are you supposed to do first? Who should you call for help? Flooded basement cleanup can be overwhelming for even the most experienced homeowner - Call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield 24/7 for immediate emergency service.

8 Things to Do When Your Basement Floods

  1. Keep safety at the top of your mind. You should never enter a flooded crawlspace or basement without assessing the situation first. If the water is covering the entire basement or is more than a few inches deep, you may need to turn off the electricity and gas before entering. Even after the power is off, enter with caution! There may be electrical appliances that are submerged in water and can pose a risk to your safety. You should also find the appropriate gear to wear into the basement if the water is possibly contaminated and could make you ill.
  2. Find the source of your basement water problem. You can't effectively clean up your flooded basement if it is still actively flooding. If the source is groundwater from heavy rains, wait until the storm has passed and water stops seeping into your basement. If flooding is due to a burst pipe, HVAC leak, or a faulty appliance, you should immediately shut off the source of the flooding. It may be obvious, but these steps can save you a lot of time and cash.
  3. If you have a drainage system or a sump pump in your basement, see if they're clogged or working. If you can get these working, the flooding can drain and the worst part may resolve itself.
  4. Begin the basement water removal process. Depending on the amount of water, you may not be able to clean it up yourself. If water is not covering the entire basement, try and use a wet dry vacuum to get up as much as you can. You can even use a mop, rags, and a bucket. If there is more than an inch or two of water covering the majority of your basement, it may be best to call a flood removal company like SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield. Water damage restoration companies have specialized equipment like extractors to quickly remove and pump water out of your basement.
  5. Remove any wet or water damaged items. Throw away things that can't be saved, and move salvageable items to another place so that they can dry more easily.
  6. Begin the basement drying process. Set up any household fans or dehumidifiers that you have in the most saturated areas. Unfortunately, many times household equipment cannot completely dry out a basement that was flooded because it just isn't powerful enough. In these cases, you should call SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield to handle the drying process for you. Our teams use commercial grade equipment to quickly dry-out your basement, and they can also perform any other demolition, like flood cuts, to ensure your basement is fully dried. Our crews even perform a moisture reading before removing equipment and declaring work completed.
  7. Clean and sanitize the basement walls and floors. You want to make sure any leftover dirt or contaminants are not left behind from the flood water, especially if it was from something like a broken sewage pipe. This step is also important to help prevent mold from growing in your basement - which may begin to spread in as little as 48 hours after flood damage.
  8. Research what you can do to prevent future floods in your basement. If something simply needs to be fixed like a pipe or sump pump, get it done as soon as possible. If groundwater was the source of flooding, take steps to waterproof your basement, install a sump pump, or change where water runs off your property from the gutters. These small steps can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration in the future.

Why Is My Basement Flooding?

Flooding or wet basements have numerous causes:

  • Water heaters or furnaces letting go
  • Burst pipes
  • Broken refridgerator lines
  • Washing machine overflow
  • Rainwater through: Cracks in the foundation, water seepage, failed sump pump, failed drainage system

Should I Call A Professional To Cleanup My Flooded Basement?

There are definitely cases where you can handle cleaning up a small amount of flooding in your basement by yourself! But, if the water covers your entire basement or is deeper than an inch or two, we strongly recommend calling a flooded basement company, like SERVPRO of Westport/Fairfield.

As a professional water damage company, we have the equipment, training, and experience to return your basement back to normal in as little as three days. Working fast is essential when it comes to water in your home to prevent the growth of mold & mildew, odors, and structural issues.

Stages of Remediation

11/14/2019 (Permalink)

Due to recent rainstorms, leaking water from the second floor of this space soaked through the floor and caused the first floor ceiling to become damaged. Three stages of restoration can be seen here. First, the affected material is removed, allowing for proper remediation to take place. Proper airflow is what is important at this stage.  Next, new ceiling material is installed. Finally, we paint to match the old color and reinstall the light fixtures.  Once the owners of this recreational facility saw the remediated area, they were happily surprised and extremely satisfied with the results.

Dirt From Water Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, sometimes it is not as easy as removing the water and drying everything out.  This low-income housing complex had a burst pipe on their second floor.  The water leaked down to the first floor, and carried with it a whole lot of dirt and debris.  The photo demonstrates just how much dirt the water stream actually brought with it. Our crew removed the water, dried everything out, and then washed the floors so that the customer was happy.  If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Huge Water Extraction

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This person called us with over a foot of water in their large finished basement.  We were on scene within minutes with our large water pump to extract the water.  Usually, we only need one hose to pull all the water out of any given structure.  There was so much water here that we had to use two hoses. Luis can be seen here making sure the water is flowing out properly to minimize the amount of time it took to remove all the water.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Acting Quickly May Save Your Belongings

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

When a basement floods, everything that is sitting on the floor gets wet.  Some things may be okay, but most of your belongings will become damaged, the extent of which only gets worse the longer they stay submerged.  Many times, if the water is pumped out and extracted quickly, some items can be saved, at least to some extent.  We specialize in large-scale water extraction, and can pump thousands of gallons of water in a timely manner.  This is a photo of a recent homeowner’s basement who called us.  With our equipment, we got the water out, and began the drying process.

Small Pipe, Big Problems

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

It is astonishing just how much damage a little water can do. Take a look at the damage in this bedroom. The entire ceiling had to be removed and some of the walls were affected as well. You can see the size of the pipe that caused the damage.  If a pipe this size can produce that much water, imagine if the pipe had been one of the larger ones in the home.

We had to remove the ceiling and portions of the wall to begin the drying process.  Once that is done, we can bring in our fans and dehumidifiers.

Flood At A Car Dealership

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Last month, the combination of a burst pipe and excess rainwater caused a local car dealership to flood.

SERVPRO of Westport Fairfield was called in to remediate the damage.  What was unique about this instance is that the water affected both carpeted and laminate flooring.  This presented a challenge because we needed to use multiple types of drying and dehumidifying tactics to successfully fix the issue.  We also had to do the job while not disturbing or damaging the automobile inventory.

As you can see in the photo, we were able to completely dry out the affected area.  The carpet in the office areas were left dry and odor free.

What is Ice Damming?

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snow pack reaching the eave and freezing there. Freezing at the eave impedes the drainage of meltwater, which adds to the ice dam and causes backup of the meltwater in a manner, which may cause water leakage into the roof and consequent damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof.

Ice dams are a common sight in the Northeast. We've handled several claims this past month stemming from ice damming. What we've found is the flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to get a grip. Gutters at the eaves can also trap snow and ice. If snow and ice build up high enough in the gutter, it can provide a foundation for an ice dam.

Stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll tell you how to prevent these dangerous ice dams.

Ice Dam Prevention

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

PREVENTING ICE DAMS

You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake from below or a broom or plastic shovel from above. BE CAREFUL: The first method can bury you in snow, while the second can send you slipping off the roof. Hire someone who knows how to use a safety line.

You can replace your shingle roof with standing seam or other metal roof. Or you can replace the bottom three feet or so of your shingle roof with a wide metal drip edge. Whatever you do, install a water-repellent membrane under any new roofing.

NOTE: If your roof is not very steep, an ice dam can still form on metal roofing and drip edges.

DEALING WITH EXISTING ICE DAMS

1. Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool! You’ll cut through the shingles. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingle with them.

2. Clear out gutters and downspouts. Again, this is ladder work and an easy way to damage either plastic or metal gutters and spouts.

3. Melt troughs through the ice dam with calcium chloride ice melter. Do NOT use rock salt! It will damage paint, metals, and plants beneath the eave and wherever the salty water drains.

A good trough-maker is a tube of cloth (a leg from an old pair of panty hose works well). Fill it with calcium chloride, tie off the top, and lay it vertically across the ice dam. It will slowly melt its way down through the dam, clearing a path for the underlying water to flow free.

WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?

When an ice dam gets big enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheetrock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.

That's where we come into play. We can't prevent the ice damming from happening, but we can help you take care of the damages that it can cause.

Frozen Pipe Water Damage In Westport Fairfield

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Temperatures have fluctuated between cold and bone-chillingly cold.  When it gets very cold, homes and businesses are at higher risk of pipes freezing and ultimately bursting.

Here are a few tips to remember:

• Check around your home or business for areas where water supply lines are in unheated areas. Wrap exposed pipes with foam, insulated materials or pipe heating cables. Watch these locations on a daily basis when temperatures is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

• If you are going out of town, and you suspect that temperatures will drop, turn off the water to your home and open all the taps to drain the water system. Set your temperature no lower than 55° F.

• Unhook the water hoses from the exterior of the home and bring them inside, to maintain their life.

• Drip your faucets, to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes during an arctic blast weather advisory.

• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much costlier repair job if pipes freeze and burst

• Open cabinet doors when temperatures are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warm air can circulate around the pipes and prevent the water from freezing.

Popular Locations of Frozen Pipes:

• Outside wall

• Under a sink

• Unheated crawlspace or basement

• Outside water spigot

• Swimming pool supply lines

• Water sprinkler lines

• Attics

• Garages

Tips on Thawing Frozen Pipes:

• If a pipe bursts before it is thawed, immediately shut off the water at the water main to prevent further damage!

• Frozen but not ruptured? If you turn on the faucet and the water doesn’t come out or comes out in a trickle, your pipes are probably frozen. You need to act quickly to thaw the frozen pipe before it bursts.

• Identify the frozen water supply pipe.

• Open a faucet supplied by the frozen line, even if you have not found the frozen spot.

• To find the blockage, follow the pipe back from the faucet to where it runs through cold areas such as an exterior wall, unheated crawl space or in some cases an unheated basement if the pipe is near an outside wall.

• Often the frozen area of the pipe will be frosted or have ice on it. If the situation is getting critical the pipe may be slightly bulged or look slightly fissured.

Frozen Pipe Behind a Wall:

• Leave the main water valve near your water meter open when thawing the pipe.

• If the frozen pipe is behind a wall or ceiling, you’ve got a challenge on your hands. You have three choices:

• Turn up the heat in the house and wait.

• Use an infrared lamp or lamps to heat the wall where you think the frozen area is located. Infrared lamps are better than regular heat lamps because the heat passes through the air without heating it, directing more energy to warming the wall and frozen pipe.

• Tear out part of the wall or ceiling to get at the frozen section of pipe. Then thaw the pipe as an exposed pipe.

If Your Pipes Burst…

• Turn off the water supply. Locate your water shut off valve and turn off the main water shut-off valve. You should find this in the basement or where the service pipe enters your home. Drain the system by turning on all your cold-water valves.

What You Can Do to Manage the Damage (until we get there):

• Water Buckets. If you notice the leak quickly you can catch dripping water in buckets.

• Make a hole in the ceiling to let water out.

• Turn off electronics/appliances

• Open Drawers, closets and cabinet doors to in enhance drying.

Saving Personal Belongings from Water Damage

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

One of the most common topics after a client suffers water damage, is how and what they can save from water damage.  Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to this question. Every water damage is unique in some sense, so what can be saved is really on a case by case basis. However, here are some guidelines that you can use to make the best decision possible.

What Type of Water Damage

Determining whether the water that damaged your personal belongings is clean or contaminated will be a big factor in whether or not it can be salvaged. Obviously, if you are dealing with clean water, the chances of you being able to save some of your belongings is higher.  Even though it may be possible to restore something that is damaged by contaminated water, it is more than likely not worth the health risk that it may bring.

Porous vs Non Porous Materials

Porous materials such as fabrics, wood, and paper are very good at retaining water. This also means it increases the chance of other dangers like mold growth, and damage beyond repair. This is not always the case and if handled quickly and properly, many times these items can be saved as well. On the other hand, porous materials like marble, metal, and porcelain - among others - usually have no problem being restored. Since there is really nothing for bacteria and mold to root itself in, a simple cleaning is usually no problem.

The Amount of Time the Water Saturated

Another factor that will come into the equation of determining what can and cannot be saved is how long the materials have been wet for. The longer an item sits in water, the deeper it can penetrate. As you can imagine, this makes it increasingly more difficult to bring it back to its normal state. The perfect example of this is wooden furniture. It takes quite a bit of time for it to really absorb and become completely water logged. If you get personal belongings out of the standing water and begin the drying process right away, you have a good chance of being able to save them.

Factor in the Replacement Cost

Water damage restoration of personal belongings is no different than any other type of repair. You will always want to evaluate how much it is going to cost to repair something versus simply replacing it. Is the item you want to save really worth paying a professional to do work on it? Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

You should also take into account that paying for restoration does not guarantee your item will be returned to its original state. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the item anyways.

If you are unsure about whether or not one of your items could be salvaged, it is best that you get it analyzed by a professional. If you hire a water damage restoration company to handle a dry out of your property, they will be able to assist you in assessing damage to your personal belongings as well. To speak to a professional water restoration representative at SERVPRO, contact them today.  They are always there to help.

Effective Yet Simple Water Cleanup Tips

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

A broken pipe is by far one of the greatest nightmares homeowners face. Even just a small broken kitchen pipe can quickly cause a considerable quantity of damage to your home. It is for this reason that you need to take care of water damage immediately.

Dealing with water damage requires seeking the help of a trained professional water restoration expert, such as the experts of SERVPRO. Before they get there, there are a few things you can do to assist in keeping the damages to a minimum. Here are a few tips:

Turn Off the Water

You might be tempted to seek out the source of the leak as your first step. This can be problematic, however, depending on the type of leak or damage. If, for instance is simply an overflowed sink, then you would just turn off the sink. However, what if a pipe that you can’t see has burst?

It’s because of reasons like these that you need to turn off the water supply as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you temporarily turn off electrical power as well. The last thing you want is for the water to mix with electrical wires!

Accelerate the Drying Process

The next step entails doing everything in your power to get your home to dry. Start by opening windows and turning on fans. This will get air flowing through your home, which will help to start drying it and also reduce the buildup of disgusting odors.

If you have a dehumidifier, turn it on immediately. It will extract moisture from the air, thus helping accelerate the drying process. Run it for as long as possible. If you stop early, it could lead to the growing of mold and mildew.

If you don’t have a dehumidifier, then don’t worry, because the water restoration experts will bring one with them. As we said earlier, however, just make sure you contact them right away. They need to get to your home as soon as possible!

Make sure you also remove rugs and other portable carpeting and place them outside to dry. Try to wipe down furniture and personal items (books, chairs, toys) as much as possible.

Pull Out a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Another step that we recommend taking is pulling out a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. We understand that you might not have one. If you do, use it to remove as much water as possible from carpets, upholstered furniture and/or tile and wood floors.

This process can take quite a while, but it’s important to remove as much water as possible. Also, make sure you focus more on wood surfaces than carpeted areas. Due to wood’s porous nature, it’s apt to soak up all the water, which in turn will cause it to become warped and delaminated.

Again, if you don’t have a wet/dry vacuum, don’t worry. The restoration professionals will take care of this for you. Just make sure you contact them immediately!

Things Not To Do

There are some things you should definitely NOT do after your home suffers from water damage:

Never leave web fabrics and clothing items in place. Try to hang them.

Also avoid leaving books, magazines and other such items on wet floors.

Please refrain from trying to use a regular vacuum cleaner to clean up water.

Avoid using electrical equipment and appliances a like television.

Stay out of rooms that have a wet ceiling.

These might seem obvious, but it’s good to know. Be especially careful with wet ceilings. They could be much weaker than you think, and the last thing we want is for a roof to collapse on you!

Final Steps

The real work won’t start until the restoration company gets there. Professionals, such as SERVPRO, possess the equipment needed to do real water extraction and repair. Part of this process will involve installing certain equipment, be it professional-grade dehumidifiers and whatnot.

When this occurs, make sure you follow the directions given to you. Usually, the professionals will ask you to keep their equipment running for a while. Make sure you stick to their schedule and do not arbitrarily turn off their equipment. This could negatively affect the drying process and make things worse.

The last thing the professionals will do is give you preventative maintenance tips.
